Old Unimog for sale local.whats it worth

There is an old unimog for sale local. I think its a 62..its running and drivable.
Its setup like a military personnel transport vehicle with canvas rear cover. The outside isnt bad. The floor pans have to be replaced. What would be a fair offer?
Asking price is 5500
Its complete and would probably be a keeper.......pics can be posted if requested...

not a fast vehicle, mine really wouldn't hardly hit 50mph. Very very good offroad though. A very good website to see some being used is Rocky Mountain Moggers. A bunch of folks out in Colorado that go on some great trips and document them well. Another neat vehicle to consider is a Pinzgauer.

There is a very-nicely restored Pinz rolling around the island. It's a neat old truck.

As I recall, with some of the drivelines, 50 was unattainable.

If you want a neat old truck that's a little more practical, find a Land Rover Series II/IIA/III with an overdrive. They can be had in that price range and can cruise pretty close to 60 while still being beasts off road.

I ran across a REAL interestin Rover the other day at a friend's mechanic's shop.

It was a turbo-diesel. I've never seen one in this country. Plus it had the snorkel, lift kit, chip, larger turbo, apparently made terrific power.

Now as far as the mog goes - that gentleman, is THE vehicle for when the zombies come!

Sounds like it is a 404. At that price I would keep looking, as rust is the killer of these things. What do you want to do with the truck? If you are looking for a long haul truck, this is not it! Also the diesel mogs are a lot better in every way. They have more power, have power steering already and just can do more. Of course you have to pay way more for all of those when you get a diesel mog. Here are two of my trucks that I am driving now. The red one will be for sale soon.

Are these the gods of off road vehicles? I know they were developed for the military. How about ours? The Humvee? Mogs and Pinzgauer are good, but how do they compare to some of the Northern European or Russian large(ish) trucks? I have seem them do some crazy off road craws. Russin built = questionable quality? Sorry for going off topic. I felt in love with this old Unimog in Mexico when they took a bunch of us tourists out into the jungle. I was thinking riding up front. From my days of messing around in the desert with my Land Cruiser, I can there is no way this thing can get over a these rocks or mud holes. And it did it without any effort.

It all depends on which model, but a truck with full rebuild from the frame up will start at about $45k and go up from there. Depending on model and options it could cost over $100k. Double cabs are very rare, so they are the ones most people want. Those are the ones selling for the big $$. We manufacture gearing so that they can have a top speed of over 80 MPH, as well as improve fuel economy. These are not for the faint of heart and a real ball to drive, both off and on road!

A series Land Rover can cruise at 60 on the flat, but up any grade the stock 4 cyl is awfully weak, even the stock 6-cyl is. Of course an engine swap cures that. They are great off-road, though I doubt they will plug through deep mud and water like a Unimog. I'd like another series truck sometime - but with prices what they are, might as well take a Range Rover, strip out the luxury bits, enjoy coil springs, V8 power, and a/c . . .

no idea re Russian large(ish) trucks

but from what I've seen a real Humvee is top notch (not the fake ones that GM put out later on)

people say the Pinzgauer is also xlnt; better than a Syncro VW Vanagon, but not as good on the hwy

typically, an owner will drive many miles on the hwy - maybe thousands, and then take the vehicle off road -- that means you want some compromise

the other issue is load capacity - it's one thing to get yourself somewhere on a dirt bike; another thing to carry 2 weeks camping supplies (Jeep) and something else entirely to be able to camp inside the vehicle itself (VW Westphalia or a tent platform on top of a Lan Drover)

eventually you get to off-road limits for anything with wheels, and need a tracked vehicle; after that you'll want to fly in...

These are all good posts, and Von is spot-on regarding rare Euro 4x4 vehicles in general. I've been off-road Jeeping for 20 years, have owned and still own several jeeps. One has to first ask himself, what do I want to do with this? Just like our P-cars, eh? Anyway, once one is over the emotional, gotta have it, or, close to that, step back and judge your motivations. I have purchased more impulse vehicles than I care to admit. Most ended up being tossed to others for cheap, or, parts stripped, and then abandoned to a junkyard. RIP to those.

If your looking for a mall crawler, but like the vintage look, feel, smell, reliability, and maybe light off-roading, there are several vehicles out there that are cheaper to buy, maintain, and if needed, restore. The Uni might not fit that description, but I've seen them out in Moab for example, and each time, I say, gesus, I want one of those. However, as I crawled over rocks with my lifted Wrangler on 38's, I realized, I already had a stout off-road vehicle; it met MY needs.

I sold that beast, as I got older, off-camber sphincter tightening rocks didn't seem all that much fun anymore. I now have a 4" lifted, spring under Wrangler with dana 44 axles and all the good stuff that I built a few years ago. Sweet. Can drive daily if needed, but good for the light wheeling I now like. Plus, we have an '85 Jeep Grand Wagoneer we bought in roswell, NM that is totally rust free. We use that daily for all our family needs, and forest service roads in NM. Goes back and forth from WI to NM without much of a hiccup. Aside from copious amounts of fuel, we like her!

If the GW isn't exotic enough, look for early Ford Broncos from '68-'77, the latter years are more desirable. They came with factory rust, and were poorly designed and built. But, they command top dollar in great condition, and are way too fun to drive. I had a '76, and spent a ton of money just to make it road worthy. Not Uni style funds though, but for me, some. Check out the 4x4 forums, Pirate for example in your search. Yo.

Two wheel drive trailbike. Hollow aluminum wheels hold water or extra gasoline. I guess it even floats, with outriggers. Very Terminator. I think Sarah Connor needed one.
