this laptop will get smashed

On another forum I belong to, we have "death on the driveway" - posts of appliances and such that have pissed us off, and suffered a horrible death on the driveway.

This laptop is about to suffer the same fate.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate after Vista had been having problems.

So far, a clean install of Windows 7 is having the same issue. Not to mention extremely sporadic connection issues. Sometimes it'll load a page, sometimes there's no connection. Like a little child inside playing with the wireless switch.

I installed a few hardware drivers...touchpad, audio, wireless... and then it refused to boot. It froze at exactly the moment the swirly Microsoft logo lights start to appear.. one little speck of orange above "Starting Windows" (I think that's what it said)

I'll give this laptop 24 hours. Then it suffers Death on the Driveway.

vas930 07-14-2011 10:51 PM

I know how you feel. Let me know and I wll do my laptop at the same time.

slodave 07-14-2011 10:54 PM

Probably another bad HD. :)

Film the death!

vas930 07-14-2011 10:56 PM

I will film it Dave. It may get ugly.

Dave, don't say that. HDD was replaced in Sept-Octoberish if last year!

slodave 07-14-2011 11:22 PM

Okay, I won't say that it may have failed again. :D

varmint 07-14-2011 11:33 PM

WolfeMacleod 07-14-2011 11:42 PM

vas930 07-14-2011 11:48 PM

Like I said Wolfe. Let me know.

slodave 07-14-2011 11:52 PM

I got a successful reboot after trying a system restore with the AV disabled. Had to restore to a point before AV was installed, so it didn't block the restore. No sure if that had anything to do with it.
So far, I haven't tried rebooting again, but I'm still getting very spotty connection issues. One second, Pelican will work, the next it won't... same for any site.

I'm having an issue choosing the right drivers from HP's website, I think. They list several drivers for different hardware configs. This is a Dv9000.. which apparently come in different sub0models. dv9700..(also listed on this machine). specifically, I think this is a dv9827cl...
... but look at all the multiple driver choices! Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv9827cl Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

(It took three attempts to post this due to connection issues)

vas930 07-15-2011 01:34 AM

Like I said Wolfe.

rnln 07-15-2011 01:51 AM

yeah, it sucks. Laptop is cheap nowaday. Throw it away and get a new one, but before you throw it away, can you box it, drive to USPS, and send it my way? Include Wolfe and Vas, now I have 2 laptops :D

Scuba Steve 07-15-2011 03:47 AM

Install XP, problem solved.

oldE 07-15-2011 03:55 AM

Or send it to my son. He says he would probably install BSD on it (a Linux system).
I have an old LG he resurrected years ago, running on Fedora. It was given to him because it wouldn't load Windows.

Hate to see a functioning tool put down without a second chance. After all, it might be the software, rather than the device.

Either way, good luck.

I had a Garmin GPS. It couldn't find the satellite. Help says to get in an open area. Can't get to much more wide open than where I live. So I gave it one more try. I drove down the road to the Shell station to get gas. It still had not found the mother ship. I calmly unhooked the thing and SMASHED it on the ground at the gas station, picked it up and threw it in the trash. I still feel good about it. :)

Nice thread Wolf.

Wolfe,
The laptop you are working on,
Does it by chance have an AMD CPU with an Nvidia GPU chipset?
The symptoms you describe sounds like a known issue with that combination. The heat gets so great that the solder joints open up on the GPU and causes intermittent glitches, Typically the wireless nic will work off and on then not at all...eventually the system board will completely fail and never post ( power on self test ) again.....
The Nvida chip controls the video and NIC. sometimes I can reflow them and fix them but even that is often temporary. A few months at best.

TGTIW 07-15-2011 04:56 AM

Exactly what happened to mine.
Switched to a Mac and never looked back.

azasadny 07-15-2011 05:19 AM

Send it to me, I'll fix it.

azasadny 07-15-2011 05:21 AM

Don't destroy it, after I fix it, a kid could use it for school.

Check HP or Nvidia if there is a recall. My mom's Mac had that GPU and they replaced the motherboard even though it was out of warranty. Looking at HP's site, it looks like it has that GPU.

Yes, it does!
Speaking of the system board, it was replaced a while back because the power connector wasn't working. It wouldn't take a charge.
the only recall thing I've found was for the battery... which apparently isn't listed for the recall.

(edit) ahha, I did find some gpu recall information that I vaguely remember, and vaguely remember that this laptop wasn't one of the affected)

love911 07-15-2011 10:56 AM

I hope you could fix yours, but if not, this time, Get a Sony Vaio,
I bought mine back in end of 2006 used(10 days old practically brand new in the box) from a guy for $900 cash, who had bought it brand new from Best Buy for $1500 with the receipt, that I could return and cash it for $1500:D.This laptop has been with me since that day, everyday from 8:00 Am-5:00 Pm,six days a week and gone through windows vista to latest windows 7 and god knows how many different software installation and configuration, and amazingly never ever had any crashes or one of those black and blue screens that everybody is talking about.
I always took good care of it, and made sure that the fan and the heath sink is free and clean.Only thing I changed was the keyboard ,which was $25 from eBay.I know its outdated for today's technologies ,but it does the job for me and I've been really satisfied.

gtc 07-15-2011 11:00 AM

Wolfe, are you and RWebb related?

RWebb 07-15-2011 12:42 PM

funny

RWebb 07-15-2011 12:43 PM

Apple has the right idea - they control the hardware AND the OS software.

They also often upgrade both at the same time.

eastbay 07-15-2011 02:41 PM

try a new hard drive cheap at Fry's

john70t 07-15-2011 04:17 PM

Will it boot in safe mode off a OS DVD?
If it then runs without problem, the AV software might be a prime suspect.

wdfifteen 07-15-2011 04:40 PM

My friend and I graduate from engineering school together and we both HATED math. He invited me to his graduation party and insisted that I bring my calculus textbook and my 20 gauge. The party involved a lot of beer and a bonfire and in a special moment that will remain in my heart forever, we ran over our calc. books with our trucks, set them on fire, shot their flaming carcasses, and pissed on the ashes. Then we ran over them some more, which might have been a bit excessive.

It is confirmed that the problem does not lie with the HDD. Brand new HDD just installed, and it won't boot from the disk (to answer John70t's question)

Neither the 64bit nor the 32 bit vesion will load fromt the disk

However...upon booting into "safe' mode from the disk, with a clean HDD, this time it froze at a file caleld disk.sys instead of the aforementioned file.

I've been on with MS Tech suport for quite a while, they can't figure it out either.
Tech at repair counter suggested a bad HDD.

Yeah? Nope...

slodave 07-15-2011 07:27 PM

At this point... Probably something wrong with the controller - i.e. bad MB.

Shoot it.

vas930 07-15-2011 07:50 PM

Still waiting Wolfe.

thank you.

had a shotgun and a can of gasoline lined up. but was happy with the grouping, so i let it be. think it works as an effective warning to all the other machines in the house.

azasadny 07-16-2011 06:06 AM

Wolfe,
My offer to fix it (free) still stands...

Seahawk 07-16-2011 08:01 AM

I shoot every electronic piece of gear that I can when they fail...TV's are a hoot to shoot.

My BB died last week (replaced by an iPhone...and I am becoming a fan boy): It gets blasted in a few hours.

Aerosol cans are the best.

Rick V 07-16-2011 08:48 AM

Old school cathode tv+ 12ga=oh yeah.
