Voyaging Canoes depart Hanalei
Went out for a sunset sail yesterday to see off a fleet of Polynesian voyaging canoes as they departed for San Fransisco.
It was a beautiful thing, with hundreds of supporters on the bch and inner bay to cheer them on their way. The trumpet shells were blowing in the dozens. Six boats from all over the South Pacific lay ed over in Hanalei for a few days of rest and celebration, were now continuing their voyage on to S. F. A few pics of them getting under way. Cheers Richard ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Our Boat Tevake, a modern canoe. A composite trimaran, named after an important traditional navigator from the Solomon Islands felt right at home in their company. |

Richard,
Any pics of the tri? I have never sailed neither a cat, nor a tri.

Cool....tho I'll bet the ancient polynesians, who were damned impressive mariners, didn't have the benefit of today's synthetic sail material or modern sloop or ketch rigging.

Hey Soukus, Sorry to miss your visit.
I am here and would enjoy getting together with any Pelicans visiting on Kauai. Talk cars, drink a beer, share some local knowledge, PM me if you are heading this way. Cheers Richard PS. I am an older family guy so may not be quite on pace with some of the more hard core partying Pelicans |

You are right on target Pwd 72, There were many comments recorded as to the impressive seamanship and Superior sailing qualities of the Pacific sailors and their boats by the early European sailors during the first encounters.
To my mind this envious divide still plays out in modern sailing. A good 45' racing multi can blow the doors off any Americas cup boat. Multi sailing records are not considered valid by the traditional sailing fraternity. A good example is a transpac race quite a few years ago. A racing cat sailed over at the same time as the race ( it was excluded from entering), in which a new record was set, 5 1/2 days, with lots of whoopla. Well the cat did the sail in 4 1/2 days, And was completely overlooked. Back to your point, the migration of the Polynesians across the pacific ( its not a calm ocean) mostly up wind was one of the great feats of ancient man. Cheers Richard |

Poki at anini sounds good, give me a shout and I'll join you. Here are some pics on the road to anini.
![]() ![]() As to selling Tevake, we had lots of good times with the boat. But my intrests have shifted towards playing with cars now. I am seeing the signs of inactivity setting in, and would be happy to see someone refresh the boat & head out to enjoy some cruising adventures of their own with Tevake. Cheers Richard PS I love sharing pics of Kauai! Last edited by tevake; 07-12-2011 at 03:59 PM.. |

My favorite island. Bodyboarding the reef at Hanalei Bay on a 4-6' day (and paddling out with sea turtles) was a memorable session.

Looked him up - very cool. Awesome that he was involved with Morph the Cat. If he needs any bass tracking I'd be happy to contribute though he's got heavy hitters working with him. I would love to go over and do some gigs in HI. That's my idea of a vacation ![]() |
