SNS ranked #3 by Popular Science!

The facility where I work (Spallation Neutron Source) was ranked as the #3 most epic science project by Popular Science magazine (in the latest August issue). Unfortunately, they got most of the technical details in the write-up incorrect and the picture they show isn't actually SNS, but what the heck.

Popular Science sent us a note explaining that we were ranked low on the "Wow factor" because no one outside of physicists really understood what we were doing. :)

Nice. Good luck on your neutron sourcing.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Can you explain in simple terms?

J/K. Congrats!

I have no clue as well...but hey, that's cool!

I have a jar of assorted neutrons in the garage, if that would help.

We have plenty, but thanks. Actually, it's kind of of interesting, but we are able to produce what are called "ultra cold neutrons" which means they essentially slow down and stop moving. I always wanted a jar of neutrons to put on my desk. :) Unfortunately they decay into smaller particles pretty quickly.

Congrats!

What do they decay to? Do they smell when they decay? Do they attract flies? Do they with off atomic ethanol like decaying grapes or yeasty malt or grain? I wanna try some atomic hoootch!

If I order some neutrons, may they be used to keep birds and squirrels away from my blueberry bushes?

porsche4life 07-16-2011 06:19 PM

Cool, you give tours right?

I have some blue ones. I have every color except pink. Those are hard to find.

You're all neurotic.

A930Rocket 07-16-2011 07:27 PM

Does Jimmy Neutron work there by chance?

M.D. Holloway 07-16-2011 07:35 PM

no but Atom Ant does...he he he

I pour the neutrons on the anthills here in Montana. All activity ceases within 10 minutes. I had it mixed up with malathian.

patssle 07-16-2011 07:53 PM

What is this? A science project in the USA that hasn't been defunded yet? Is there a military link or something?
