How Often Do You Buy American? What Products?

In the past six months, how many times did you choose to buy a US-made product in a category where most of the choices were imported?

Repeat: in a category where most of the choices were imported. That means, your US-brewed beer doesn't count. I'm asking about times where most of the products you saw were imported, and you had to go out of your way, at least a little, to identify and choose a US-made product.

If you wish to elaborate a bit, what product was it, how much did it cost, and would you give a mini-review? Should other Pelicans consider it the next time they need a new whatever?

This is a follow-on to the thread Is anything made in the US anymore ?

I can't name anything specific offhand, but for two items of equal quality / utility, I'll buy the made in USA one, even if it costs a little more.

Built in Flat Rock, MI:

Very few of my mechanic's tools are imported...mostly craftsman, with some snap-on mixed in. This a choice.
My rollaway selection was a made in the usa craftsman set, purposely chosen over the less expensive imported chests offered by Costco...

And if you are driving a Honda, or Toyota or a MBz SUV, it was likely made in the USA

Truth...things get muddy when selecting cars...do your research.

Kind of difficult for me to fill in the poll. Haven't really bought a lot of "stuff" in the last 6 months. Being retired, we are mostly into "replacement" buying. Oh, both my cues and the case I carry them in? Made in the USA. Yes, many of the lower cost cues are chinese...My guns are all made in the USA, but I've had them for decades...

My Z3 Coupe was "made" in the USA, but I don't know where the parts came from.

I've always tried to buy American made if the product is available in what I'm looking for. The difficulty now is finding American made products. I don't know if this falls in the category but I try to buy locally grown produce instead of cheaper foreign grown fruits and vegetables and of course American meat products.

This is one of the times you can actually believe in what you buy, that and it won't have the crap sprayed on it you will find with stuff from Mexic.

I buy a lot of computer hardware and software and almost nothing is made in the US, except the software. Life and our marketplace is too complicated to simply "buy American" since we don't know where the components come from, where they are assembled, etc... The Kahr gun company uses US workers and the products are made in the US but Rev Sun Yung Moon (Moonies) own the company, for instance...

Does "buy American" mean:

- products assembled in the US
- products assembled in the US
- companies owned by Americans
- companies that use American workers
- American products that use foreign-sourced parts
- companies in the US that make their products overseas

I'm confused...

I put myself down for "1". This was my refrigerator - I intentionally paid about $500 more for one made in Georgia rather than one made in Korea.

For the other purchases I've made in the past six months, some likely happened to be US-made but I can't honestly say I sought them out.

$500 only? Subzero? What us made ref. is $500 more then a Korean one? If its a Subzero. that's a whole lot more ref then any Korean made product.

This just got me thinking. Next time some of you stay in a hotel, make sure they are own by AMericans. I discovered some of the big hotels here in downtown are owned by foreigners. Stay in a Motel 6 next time, and make sure your taxi driver is made in America also. If not, plan on walking on our American soil. John, this is not directed at you personally, but just sayin'

Jeff
