Looking for a cool job for next summer

Obviously its still a ways away, but I'm starting to look to next summer for something interesting to do. I would love to get a job somewhere away from OK. I'd love to see a different part of the country, or maybe world.

One option I know of is Philmont. I could be on staff there, likely working in one of the climbing camps.

I'm an eagle scout with backpacking and climbing/ropes experience. I also dive and will be a certified rescue diver by next summer....

My major is Marketing, so something along those lines wouldn't be bad either.

So what say the brain trust. You guys know of anything I should look at?

Look to Canada. Like I mentioned before. I ran into a kid on a plane that worked at a camp up there. You've got the right experience.

There's the summer camp I went to in Northern Cali... I can point you to the person to talk with. Pay ain't great, but it's a job and plenty of outdoor time. Heck, they even have a ropes course and not a wimpy one.

It seems like you are more interested in a summer experience than making big money - which probably isn't much of an option anyway. Maybe an internship would be a decent way to spend the summer & acquire some knowledge & experience. There are other options you could explore. When I worked for the National Park Service we had VIP's (Volunteers in Parks) who worked at different jobs in different places. A couple worked in the back country manning stations there. I think you could dig up some pretty good possibilities if you researched it enough and networked like you're doing here.

If going the BSA staffer route, I've got a few suggestions:

Florida Sea Base
Camp Parsons (Seattle-area)
Camp Meriwether (Oregon Coast)

I looked at sea base. But if I was there I would want to dive, and the only dive jobs that work with my certification level also require a Coast Guard boat captains license. I can't make Divemaster, or get the Coast guard license in the next year...

I'll look at the other camps. If I go BSA though, it'll most likely be Philmont.

Have you considered becoming a roof-girl? If nothing else it'll get ya famous.

We did a kayak trip with OARS last year at Yellowstone. Looked like a very cool summer job. They do a lot more than just whitewater trips.

I'll keep an eye on their site. It looks like they do some hiking trips. I'd love to get a job hiking...
