My son used to work for a whitewater rafting company on the Nantahala River (NC). I don't recall it being a full-time gig; however, he enjoyed it a lot.

I did the ww rafting thing for five summers all through the west. In the spring and fall I also taught ww kayaking. Learning to run rivers isn't that hard, river dependent: you'll make mistakes, everyone does.

While it is a great summer job if you are inclined to the outdoors, there are a few drawbacks, things to think about.

- It is hard work, believe it or not, especially at put in and take out. Lots and lots of manual labor. Since you'll be the new guy, you get all the special tasks.

- People. Depending on the type of trip, you spend one, two or three nights with the same group and all day everyday. You cook for them, take care of them and generally try to keep them from getting hurt. If you don't have people skills, you may not enjoy the job.

- Low water can make time stand still. Nothing sucks more than low water in August with fat people in your boat on a oar trip. Nothing.

- You need a car.

That is about it.

Have fun. If you decide to go that route, PM for some handy tips and gear suggestions.

I am with others who suggest you review possibilities of interning with a potential employer. It can jump start your future and provide you with invaluable knowledge!

Hugh's idea sounds like fun and it would be up your alley with your major. Might as well enjoy your work!

There are all sorts of youth camps who might LOVE to have someone with your knowledge and skills if you wish to spend the summer helping those younger than you.

Get out and enjoy, you are young! Find where you would like to go then see how you could get there and worry about where to live later. You never know what will crop up!

And about Cougars, don't knock something until you try! There can be some VERY fun times there and it ain't all about the s word either! There are many things you can learn! I had several women friends who were ten to twenty years older than me when I was younger. I grew and matured rather quickly and learned much about the world around me. (Don't try it if you have religious or other grounds for not attempting. Morals are more important than many people believe!)

That was part of the deal with the outfit my friend worked for. She had no experience, either. They trained her in return for her labor at the camp for the summer.

There is a boy scout camp on Catalina island (24 miles off the coast of Los Angeles) that would be an extremely cool place to work, great recreational scuba too.

Roatan Divemaster Internship at Dockside Dive Center, Western Caribbean

blow bubbles, chase bikinis, drink cheap good rum

I did this program and lived on Roatan Island off of Honduras for 6 weeks. Got in 82 dives in WARM water. Learned about working in the dive industry and professional partying as a cough cough employee at a resort.

You could get your Dive master and Assistant Instructor certs while down there.

PM me for more details and I can get you in contact with the right people.

The divemaster thing looks fun, but I'd like to at least break even next summer. Not go in the hole several grand.

Fool.

repeat after me, "would you like Fries with that order?" there you go, a job.

"go in the hole several grand?" That's over a month long job, yes you get good experience, your dive master cert, plus warm water diving for $500 a week out of pocket, that's less than $100 a day. You also get tips from guests, see the world, NOT take a college course for diving that takes you a whole quarter to complete.............housing/meals/jobs/diving.......the guest pay $1400 a week for the same thing.

I'd seriously be interested in your rescue diver training, at a college pool, or will they take you to a lake for real world experience, CPR, water rescues, fireman carry. Just curious.........as rescue diver is one damn tough course in the real world, not on a campus.......

Soooooooo, I guess a Scout Camp taking care of 13 year olds at summer camp for minimum wage may be as what other people suggest. Maybe a Band Camp with a Flute? Fries with a Shake? If you're not going to stay in OK, then you're going to travel, stay somewhere, eat, and gasp, have out of pocket expenses, and doubt if you'll break even......

grins. just giving you a hard time.....no harm no foul.......maybe I'd rescue while diving, maybe I wouldn't.

he heh

We do the book work and cover skills in the pool, and then towards the end of the course we will spend several days at various lakes. We don't just play. I also am on a scholarship that pays for my classes, so I'm only having to pay for gear... Which I would need a regulator, 2nd stage, BCD, wetsuit, etc. All I have at the present are mask, fins, snorkel, and boots. The school provides the rest.

I'm not totally counting it out. But I'd have to come up with some serious coin.

In my mid 20's I worked two summers at a girl's camp after getting out of the Army & between college terms. There were 180 campers from 10 to 18 years old and 42 female counselors. I was paid a passable amount with food & lodging. The counseling staff guaranteed a good time for the 8 guys working there. Look for something like that. Couldn't ask for a better summer job.

So I guess a job hanging signs in 100+ degree heat in Boise City is just not "cool" enough.

When we were in Alaska on vacation I chatted with a dude that was early 20s working at a water rafting place on the Kenai peninsula. Every day twice a day was a new batch of folks to guide down the river. He said his brother worked up at Denali and was a guide in the park. Not great money but great location and it is cool.

Glen the location in state isn't the problem, its the fact that we are working on satans scrotum... I mean Oklahoma. Its just too damned hot here....

Besides, I am young, I want to experience something different, see the world so to speak.
