Tell me about Savannah GA

I will be spending a week in Savannah GA soon. I was wondering if GA is like most states that sell beer at a gas station or do I have to go to a beer store like in PA?

Can I buy a few 6 packs of local or regional beer in downtown Savannah?

Is there a good grocery store in the downtown part of Savannah or do I have to drive to the suburbs? What direction from downtown is the bad part of town that I want to stay out of?

I know there is no convenient place to buy beer in downtown Charlotte NC. My GPS wanted me to go into some VERY seedy parts of town to find beer or groceries in Charlotte. I want to plan ahead and have a location in mind this trip.

Whatever else you do, you MUST go to the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum there. Must see.

Old Fort Jackson as well.
East and west of the main touristy downtown area can get kinda sketchy. Heading straight down abercorn brings you to all of the shopping. If you're bored, mission essential has full auto weapons rental and a nice indoor range. The wildlife refuge is pretty neat as well. If you cross into sc, be very conscious of your speed. The town that stretches the border is nuts about revenue generation. Strip clubs are right over the bridge on hwy 17. If you find yourself wanting to explore and looking for great food, there are some incredible restaurants on HHI, I just wouldn't suggest coming up here on a Saturday. Timeshares change out on Saturday and traffic is insane.

I am traveling with my wife and I don't think she is into strip clubs much.

No beer on Sunday. Thanks for that heads up. Stock up on Saturday. We will be there for the Porsche Parade so most days are busy but there is some free time. Whatever we do will be indoors as much as possible. August in Savannah might be a little hot.

The Historic District is full of old houses, and parks originally laid out by James Ogelthorpe in the 1730s.

If you are into old houses, you will be in Mecca.

And yes, there is a bad part of town so ask around.

We were there last year, actually we stayed at Hilton Head and came down about 4 times, plus stayed at the River Street Inn the last night.

We did the trolly tour to get the lay of the place, actually took a couple of them from the same company (the cover the whole town, you can get off and on so we used it to get around), and what you get from it really varies with the driver. None of them were bad, but some were definitely better than others.

We ate at "The Oyster Bar" a couple times (on River Street), it was prety good.
Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House is worth a visit, but only open for lunch.
We drove past Paula Deen's place a couple times, always a huge line.
We spent the day on Tybee Island, had dinner at the Crab Shack, also very good seafood.

There were a bunch of the historic houses turned into museums that we would have liked to tour, but we had our 4 year old, and that probably wouldn't have been a good idea.

If you do make it to Hilton Head, try the Skull Creek Boathouse. We ate there twice, and it was outstanding.

Please don't waste your time waiting in line to eat there. Just my opinion.

Father in Law wanted to go there, so he stood in line for over 1 hour to get a table. In the meantime, we walked around and really enjoyed the city. We were finally ushered in to a large table that was already served full of food. My Mother in law is allergic to MSG so she asked if they could tell her what was safe for her to eat. The reply was "We have no idea what has MSG, so I can't recommend anything." Everything was just overly processed food, nothing was fresh. It was basically an all you can eat lunch for $18 per person.

I would rather eat at Boston Market, tastes the same without the wait.

Savannah........

Try to eat supper at the Pirate house which is down on River St. Also, take a "Ghost Tour" if you have time. There should be walking tours and buggy tours. There is a "River Boat" for nautical tours. If you have time to zip up to Charleston, be sure to see the Hunley. It is located at the old Navy base. First submersable to sink an enemy ship!

Ok, most of the stuff on this thread is typical tourist stuff........

First lets start with adult beverages...... If you are staying downtown, Johnnie Ganems is the place for all of your hops and barley needs along with a huge selection of fine wine. Supporting Savannah's Oldest Tradition... | Johnnie Ganem. Staying in mid-town Hebersham Beverage, also has a great selection of micro and imports.

If you want to get some real southern cooking..... Mrs. Wilkes is the place you want to try. The comment about msg and nothing fresh is laughable, you would understand if you have ever been in their kitchen.

There are many very nice restaurants in Savannah, with most of the typical tourist stuff on River Street. Hands down, year after year my favorite restaurant downtown is Garibaldi's on Congress street. If you have a free night and want fine dining.... check them out.

BBQ, Wileys on Whitemarsh Island, Wiley's Championship BBQ voted best BBQ in Savannah since they rolled into town several years ago. Blow'in Smoke on MLK is damn good also.

Avoid Hilton Head at all cost, traffic will make you want to blow your brains out!! Sorry, HHI944 but those are the facts.

Bonna Bell Yacht Club is a cool spot for outside waterfont dining.....locals only.

GH85, we have a non-pca function on Monday at Tubby's in Thunderbolt. Lowcounty boil, southern fried chicken and drinks...... Its a 968 get together but all are welcome to come. Tuesday in the am we are doing as driving tour of the 1911 Vanderbuilt Cup track followed by lunch at the Ford Plantation.....do a google seach on the Ford plantation and you will see how special that it is.

By the way for all of you non-locals did you know that the birth place of open wheel racing in America was Savannah? www.americangrandprize.com/id15.html

Savannah is on my list of places that I really, really want to visit! I love St Augustine, FL and I've been told the two places are similar.

Tell me about Savannah GA

I am coming for Porsche Parade. I will be eating at all the banquets but there are a lot of lunches that we can find some local fare. I am staying at the resort for the first few nights. I expect we will find someplace cheaper after Tuesday night.
