Need some tire knowledge.... 1976 Chevrolet K-10

My youngest son graduates Parris Island as a US Marine very soon. Naturally, I am extremely proud of him. Not only will he be a Marine; but, during rifle week he contracted bi-lateral pneumonia. Rather than rest in the hospital (and risk not graduating with his Platoon) he went to the range and while running a high fever qualified expert!

Anyway, he is my "redneck" son. So, as a surprise gift I bought him a 1976 Chevrolet K-10. I bought it from Nevada so it's rust free. It has a new crate engine, rebuilt np205 transfer case, rebuilt TH350 transmission, new Rough Country suspension, etc....

As you can see, the truck is crying out for new rims and tires. The bolt pattern is 6 x 5.5. I like the flat black Pro Comp steel wheels (model 97-5883F). What size and type tires should I consider that would be good for highway but also handle occasional off road use?

I sort of like the old school ralleye wheels. I'd pop some trim rings and some BFG' 31x10:50 on there and call it a day. Cool old truck.

Nice gift, Dad! That vintage of truck should keep its stock steelies with some tall narrow rubber. It would look pretty good with some 33X10.5 or so tires.

Keep the cool ralley wheels, and mount 33"x10.5" Cooper Discover tires on them. They have several different tread patterns from mild to wild, and they seem to last forever, also fairly cheap.

So, 33's are probably the right size? The truck has a 2" lift.

I had an 85 full size Jimmy (K5?).
I used B.F. Goodrich all-terrain T/A's year round. It was a good tire, They weren't noisy on the highway. I don't recall the tire size.

I'd say 33's would be a good size and 35's would be too much for frequent use. Now a P-metric size 33 might be better so you don't get a wide 12.5" and instead find a more truck looking narrower tire. I believe there is a BFG All Terrain available in 33X10.5X15.

+1 on the BFG All Terrain. I am not an expert, but would go for a tall tire that isn't too wide. They do better in the rain and mud. If you do buy wheels, why not wait until he gets the truck, so he can help chose. That's half the fun - why take it from him?

I can't comment on the rim and size, but have had my share of all terrain tires. BFG are good, but for the same money, I really like my last set of Bridgestone Revos on my Land Cruiser. Best AT hwy riding tires with very low noise, great in the snow, and rough trails to small streams.

How many miles do you get out of them? I get >50k on the BFG All Terrains. 60k if the last miles are in summer where I can run them fairly low profile (but still not to the wear bars!).

I got 50k+ out out them easy. they are about 3/16" to the wear bars. I will not hesitate to get them again.

Whatever size you choose, there are a lot of good choices in AT tires. I've owned and been happy with BFG AT, Michelin LTX, Bridgestone Revo, General Grabber AT2.

My current favorite, by far, is the Goodyear Wrangler Silentarmor
Kevlar construction makes for a much quieter, smoother tire....as well as stronger

Good looking
Aggressive tread, without being loud
Relatively expensive, but worth it
I've had them on four trucks now

For those who do nto go off road and are looking for hi milage, try BFG's commercial tires. I think they have an off road commercial one too. I have then on my regular truck. They wear like iron under normal condition.

Are these the "Dueller A/T"? My buddy never got decent miles out of his.

It is good input. I'll consider these. I shop for tires at Costco, so I am stuck with Michelin or BFG for now.

The full name is Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO2...."Duelers" are just Bridgestone's truck tire family, but they make several ATs

i had the Revo 2's..they lasted alright under a light truck. but i seem to remember some issues with keeping them balanced.

my next tire will be Coopers. AT/3 for an all terrain..or for the serious offroader..the STT. really nice nice tires. Australian guys run them..and they are insane offroaders.
