Chevy Cruze. I'm impressed.

Wife and I were recently in the midwest, and got a rental car. It was a Chevy Cruze. As I walked out into the parking lot, I had a sense of dread at the prospect of spending 3 days driving in a crappy GM product. Looked pretty bland on the outside.

We get in. Interior is not too shabby. Layout is logical. Buttons are sleek and easy to find. Seats are supportive. Nice fabric covering dash surfaces. Not a Mercedes to be sure, but it doesn't feel cheap and plasticy.

We get on the road. The engine is peppy, pulls strong. Winds ups, but doesn't sound buzzy. Suspension is competent on the road. Cruises at 75, doesn't get upset by poor roads. No rattles.

I was impressed. GM has come a long way.

I too rented one and was also surprised by it all the way around except for the peppy part. Mine was anemic in the power department.

I will look again if it is available in a hatchback. America's fascination with compact sedans is beyond me.

Good to hear it's getting better......I rented a new GM Cobalt a few years ago for the crappy roads getting out of Boston up to Bangor,ME in the winter.......Suspension felt like it had 200,000 miles on it from day one......Was a real $hitBox.......

Rented one a week ago.

Seemed like a good car. Power (enough) up here at 7,000'. Stiff and responsive for an econobox. Would have been perfect, for that segment, with a stick shift.

An order of magnitude better than the Malibu that we were subjected to as a GSA car pool vehicle.

I know that the haters are down on Government Motors, but there's a few good ones out there... If I needed an appliance car this one would be neck-n-neck with the Focus.

I drove a Cruze with the base engine. It was a horrible POS.

The Cruze with the turbo engine fared much better.

We had one for two weeks as a company rental. Nice as far as appliance cars go, much nicer than the new Corolla though I still prefer the Mazda3 or Focus.

I liked it as a rental. Same as most Fords I've had of late.

Now the Dodge Avenger on the other hand....

Funny you say that. I was recently given a Chrysler 200 as a rental when my car was in the shop. It was a horrible, horrible piece of crap. I felt like I was driving a car made in soviet russia. Junk.

I've had both. My Avenger is 'de-contented' and much much worse. Today there was a really light frost and the windows were frozen shut.

Yup - those gas mileage numbers have my attention. I am not sure if they plan to get the hatchback here. They have it in Europe per Eric aka Kaisen.

I've had 200s and Journeys as rentals, all terrible $h!tboxes. A new Charger was tolerable, but still not very good.

The Cruze dominated the WTCC this season.
