the the bear essentials.........

well after a nice discussion with phil arrington(arringtonaccuracy.com) about essential bear spoons, my train of thought wasnt askewed as many may believe.

phil has been hunting since the planet was formed, he knows his poo big time. works with mcmillian on alot of sniper platforms going to the big sandboxes. he knows his spoons, knows his bullets, knows his ballistics, and sure as hell knows how to shoot a damn fine string on the line, evidenced by his camp perry scores.

phil also hunts elk with a bad mofo 1903 springfield, aside from his main biz of doing M1A platforms.

so wez gots to talking about bears and our upcoming trip into the voodoo vortex of freeking ursus horriblis. and i threw out my selections, along with the mods on them.

once again as any of us who have a clue about ursus horriblis can attest to, you are going to get off very few shots in the event of a charge from close quarters. hence short barreled spoons are mandated. remember if i was hunting the pricks i would either bring my mcmillian m-70 .338 win mag or up the ante to a sako .375 h&h. but i aint hunting them..............i am just visiting them and stealing their freeking TROUTS! which also includes camping with them and everything associated with camping in the voodoo vortex ursus-ville.

anyway phil was leaning heavily towards a springfield socom (which i have all modded out) with a 20rd mag with 180 grain azz whupper rounds. basically he stated they dont make a bear that can stand 20-25 rds of .308 bullets. my thoughts exactly i concluded. now is carrying a 20-25 mag illegal?? since i am not hunting, i would have to say no. and the simple fact, if i am about to be made into bear poo, the last damn thing i will worry about is some clown azz mr ranger trying to cite me for carrying a illegal magazine. i will have much more pressing issues..........like saving my azz. the socom has a mount for a streamlight with extendo push button. great for taking a poo at night or investigating noises at night.

we then discussed what would work for wifey, to back me up while i am stealing mr/mrs. ursus trouts and generally doing my fishing thang. and we concluded some federal low recoil(designed for chick cops) 12 ga slugs and buck alternating as discussed with a #6 bird round to their face in the event of a charge to blind them, and then the rest of the slugs and buck rounds following. this will be a challenge as she has not shot a snotgun ever. doesnt mean she cant, but it will be a challenge training her with my benelli M-2 tactical. gonna start her off with a few #6 bird rounds and kind of ease her into the program. and then step her up to the low recoil federals in buck and slugs. dont think she wants to shoot any brenneke full loads(which i have stashed already). m-2 also has a mount for a streamlight with extendo switch cable push button. perfect for sweeping the campsite before running out to go poo or pee.

we have already discussed the marlin 1895GS i have built here, suffice it to say every damn goodie part , up-fixin part has been installed and then the action "buttered" by nelson ford (thegunsmith.com). today i am springing the bucks for the wildwestguns.com BIG LOOP LEVER from midwayusa. 148.99. simple install and if i have any hickups, i'll just take it to nelson ford(thegunsmith.com) for any fitment issues. now we have fired quite a few of the hornaday leverevolution 325 grains already downrange to break it in. picked up some of the real deal 125 year old recipe kawboys and injun rounds. these would be called for those that wanna know..............45/70/405. yep the real deal and they got some UMMMPPH! thats .45 caliber, 70 grains powder, 405 grain bullet. ser-i-azz stuff. i picked these up from buffalo bore whom i have mentioned. cycled a mag tube thru and all went well. just as long as ya have the damn rifle stuffed hard into yer shoulder you'll be OTAY! if it aint set in yer shoulder i gurrantee you will be crying for yer mommy!

now to up the ante some more(because i really do value my azz), i picked up some buffalo bore 350 grain 45/70 rounds. these are called "penetrators". these come out at about 2150 fps vs the "original recipe" 405 grains come out at 2000fps. last night i fed both into magazine tube intermingled and they fed just fine in and out of mag tube into chamber and then back on out. so far so good.

read the buffalobore.com recipe book for furthur details.

and then.........the m-29-3 4" nickel smith as mentioned. these will carry the buffalobore 305 grain bullet coming out da muzzle at 1325fps.

now i know some out there are wondering why in the hell am i taking (4) spoons???

well think about this..................WHY NOT?.....................BECAUSE I CAN! and "BRING ENOUGH GUN" makes a HELL OF A LOT OF DAMN SENSE!

ever hear of PREPOSITIONING YER ASSETS?

There is a guy who rebarreled a FAL to 358 Winchester - just a 308 necked up to 358 cal. Works great, he uses it to hunt bear in Alaska w/ 5 rnd mag, or puts in a 20 rounder for fishing duty

My only concern w/ your M1A socom plan is the 180grn loads - isn't one of the M14 platform's weak points the op rod and other-than-nato-standard gas pressure curves? Of course, if you've run this by a socom 'smith and he is OK with it then it shouldn't be an issue....

this will be for blackies in new messiko and colorado, then blackies and brownies in wyoming/montana,blackies in utah, and then blackies back here in az.

this is a roadtrip with no rhyme or reason except to catch TROUT! and obviously see stuff we havent and take millyons of pics. and eat drink and be merry pranksters.

the smith m-29 needs to be shot with the buffalo bore.

the socom needs to be fired for function with 180's or whatever i find at bass and cabelas today.

the marlin 1895gs needs to be fired with my mixed recipe of 405's and 350 grain bullets.

the M-2 doesnt need nothing as its been shot alot and never any feed issues whatsoever nor eject issues. hell i put the round limiter in it from my M1super 90 HK 12 ga and used the M-2 for quail, pistol grip and all. nice and light.

all these are for ,is if we do have an encounter. dont want an encounter any way shape or form. but thats a pipedream. we WILL have some sort of encounter.

camping/fishing/cooking/pooing= BEARS ALWAYS!

no matter how many precautions ya take, they are naturally curious.

going to cabelas and bass today to look at bear proof containers to hang in trees. been der dunned dis many times before.

poo 200yds from camp, brush teeth 200yds from camp, hang all food, dont sleep in same clothes ya cooked in. hang cooking clothes. leave nothing out. burn everything blah blah blah. man its a giant PITA every single time. except this time, its brown bears not just blacks as we are used to here in az, new messiko and colorado and utah.

the things i go thru to catch TROUT!

the M1A1 platform is excellent against all extant bear species, and should work well in case some geneticist resurrects the extinct cave bear or other large extinct species

NBC capabilities provide an added plus!

Leave all that at home. The only thing you need is an M136.

May I point out that if you have all 4 of those spoons with you (and assorted addons) and you are trying to steal someones trout if you fall down in the water you will drown with all that weight.

What are the board's feelings on .41 magmum or .45 (long) Colt for a bear sidearm? Are those rounds as flexible as a .44 magnum in being able to load gentler rounds (like .44 special) for practice?

what kind of bear?

the only sidearm that might be of much use with a grizzly is made in Freedom, Wyo.

You most likely could, but I'd have a solid plan B.

I recall a story long ago about a bear that was killing livestock and they think might have even got a person or two in Wyoming. Story was when it was finally put down, they found several bullets from several calibers of gun's in said bear, some of them Rifle bullets.

Who knows?

Supposedly Bowie fought a bear with a knife, and won.

I think you will live longer staying away from bears.

45 LC in the right gun can give the 44 mag a run for its money and then some w/ high end reloads.

Enough for bear? Certainly better than nothing... although if I were going all I have to take is a 1911 and a FN-FAL. Load the 1911 w/ FMJ and the FAL w/ premium ammo from Fed or similar and I wouldn't feel under gunned ...
