BMW Mini forum its quiet over there.

This is not P car related, but this is the OT. So here goes my son has an 09 Mini
Clubman John Cooper Works that has been logging some CEL codes, two too be
exact they are System lean at idel, and Bank one lean at idel. No one seems to have
a clue, not the dealer, or the most popular independent in the area. So I thought that I
would toss it out here on the PPOT. I will up load two images from under the hood
first one shows a part with a MINI emblem, the second image shows said part with
the cover removed, what is this this thing? I hope that FastFred, or one of the other
independent wrenches might jump in here, thanks in advance guys.

check for air leaks, injector seals, hoses and so forth. check for low fuel flow from an injector. check for low compression/leakdown.

find a local mech who has a "smoke machine".....a quick smoke test will show any intake/vacuum leaks which is what it sounds like you have......

if this is under warranty i would demand the dealer handle this, or call mini-usa to lodge a complaint, i know bmw will consult with their dealers to solve problematic cars.....and being that mini is owned by bmw i would goto the top, if not you'll be chasing this after the warranty is up.....

The air flow meter will not show up most of the time as a code..It will show codes for lean here and there, bank here and there and so on.
I would start there after a good smoke test.
Also look at the electrical connectors under the hose connection just above the center top of the transmission on the back of the cylinder head. They leak antifreeze and it gets inside the connectors.
Also the pedal rheostat will cause this sort of stuff.

I think one of the most flustrating things about working on these cars is the poor BMW information given to the independant shops. The BMW shops around here will not even work on them. The MINI shop one and ahalf hours from here is no better. To bad they could realy be a great car.

I see the older ones with high dollor problems and the customers just dump them.

Have you put this problem out on NAM yet. Also Mass motoring has a pretty good tech as it's admin.

Sorry I can't help beyond this. I haven't dared to look into anything more than a basic wash on my MINI yet.

I answered your question on the MINI board. PCV system is broken. That panel is NOT supposed to come off. its part of the valve cover as is the PCV valve (stupid design). Youll need to replace the valve cover.

You're very right about this. I did a training course on the Mk2 MINIs a few months ago. There's a lot about these cars that require computer interfaces.. I have a stack of factory manuals about a foot thick that just cover the electronic modules on the car.

T77911S That is the exactly what I told my son to mention to the tech at the independent shop, to no avail.
BELL Yes a smoke test would have been nice, but no equipment at either shop.
David McLaughlin The son may have posted on NAM, I do not know. Thanks for the info.
ENZO1Yes its strange looking ain`t it.

No, this is a special order part from BMW. Changing the valve cover should not be too difficult if he decides to do it himself..
