America's Debt Crisis

Given the significance of the debt crisis and bid to raise the debt ceiling I'm surprised there hasn't been any posts on this (or if there have been I must have missed them).

Down in this part of the world (NZ and Australia) it is big news. The uncertainty has pushed our dollar (NZD) stronger against the USD and the Australian Dollar pushes ever higher too.

I'd be interested in what the Americans here think about what is going on in Capitol Hill - are you just resigned to accepting whatever happens? Or is it something that is of real concern to you? Or is it not that big a deal and our media here are short on other news?

Interested on American views and how they thing it might affect them, the future, your standard of living, your children's future etc....

Ahhh good point. I have now.

What I was more interested in what not so much the politics and mechanisms of reaching an agreement but more about how people think it will affect them.

It's political theater in Washington. And those block headed politicians have damaged Americas reputation. That being said our stock market is only 5% off this years high.

A possible - maybe probable - outcome after Nov '11 is a 2% cut from Medicare funding. Just FYI.

We really don't have a choice but to accept what happens.
The debt "crisis" is totally manufactured by a small faction of US politicians. We have a debt problem, and an economic recession crisis. Unfortunately the folks in Washington decided it would be a good idea to wreck the slow recovery out of the recession by hyping up the importance of the debt issue.

If you wondered why various healthcare stocks were hit today, the factor mentioned in my prior post is part of it.

The other thing to note is that defense spending will likely get cut by up to $800 billion over 10 years (1/3 of the $2.4 trillion cut), or about $80 billion/yr, which is a big cut relative to a defense budget appx $680 billion annually. I don't have details or exact numbers yet, I believe that is in addition to the wind-down of the wars. I'm not sure how deeply weapons procurement will have to be cut, or how much the armed forces will have to shrink.

I imagine that China is thrilled to see us hollowing out the US military :-(

I know. They are just itching to start the US mainland invasion since the budget will be $650 billion a year instead of $680 billion. How will we defend ourselves with just a gutless military with no budget?

I think the move "American President" summed it up best

Politicians aren't the least bit interested in solving your problems. They are interested in two things and two things only: Making you afraid of it and Telling you who's to blame for it!

I read this a while ago and never really thought about it but it makes sense. I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to attempt a mainland occupation of the US.

World's Largest Army.....

The world's largest army... America 's hunters! I had never thought about this....
A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

* There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin . Allow me to restate that number.
* Over the last several months, Wisconsin 's hunters became *the eighth largest army in the world.
* More men under arms than in Iran .

* More than in France and Germany combined.
* These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed.
* That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan 's 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now returned home.

* Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
* The point?
* America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.
* Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

The Media has gone 24/7 on this now that Casey Anthony is off the front pages. It has instilled fear in the Markets. For the average American life goes on.

Too bad the first place to be attacked would likely be coastal CA, where there aren't a lot of gun owners. When the cops were outgunned by two guys in that N. Hollywood bank heist about 15 yrs. ago, that's all any invader needs to see.
