shotgun barrel dent removal

A fellow pelican here sent me a pair of barrels from his Parker 12 ga. for a little work. The one barrel had one of the nastiest dents I have seen in a long time.

I have a pretty cool tool that makes this process go a lot smoother that is a tightenable anvil that works from inside the barrel..

You measure the location of the dent on the outside and mark it with a piece of tape so that when you insert it into the barrel the anvil will be directly under the dent. You then tighten the anvil up by tightening the thumb screw. The anvil is not used to raise the dent but as an anvil inside the barrel so that you can work the dent out by tapping around the dent to get it out. Tightening the anvil as you go...

tapping with a brass drift helps finish it off.

I little draw filing to flatten it out. Not too much as shotgun barrels are thin and you don't want a weak spot at any cost..

emory cloth course then fine and off to the bronze wheel for a polishing.

No visible dent at all anymore. inside or out.

Now they need to be re- rust blued for a "proper" finish. They will be stripped white, polished, rusted and boiled. But that is another thread for the next couple days.

That is a great process. Thank you for sharing that, I'm not a gun guy, but I love to see that kind of stuff.

I'm a gun guy, from a strictly shooting sense, and this stuff always fascinates me.

Thanks, Dave. Cool stuff. I do still have you on ignore, so...

How does this affect the rifling on the inside of the barrel? Is this tempered metal? New to guns here, fascinating process.

Shotgun, so no rifling to worry about.

It's easy to do. Seems the higher quality of the gun, the thinner the barrels. If you bang it on a car door or it hits something when you set them down hard ..bingo a dent. Of all the repairs I do dents are the most common.

Jared, some shotguns are rifled as a second barrel. They are slug guns for deer hunting. Firing a slug out of them usually takes any dents out LOL. but good question. No, no tempering at that thickness I think they would be brittle.

If I could only see the above, I would gladly inform you that all is forgiven...

Nice work, David. It seem the tool keeps the barrel integrity intact. Does the barrel need to be re-proofed? I'm no doubt misusing the term, but RPSQ rightly talks about barrel proofing, pressure tests, etc.

Just interested.

Again, such a cool way to spend a day.

Any tips for pulling the action tube on a remington 11-87? Looking like it's silver soldered in there. I was going to get some heat stop and start lightly with the torch all around it.

Paul that is a european thing, mostly English. Any barrel work and it has to be re-proofed over there. Here we don't care if you blow your hands off LOL. That was about 2 hrs of work. Re-bluing takes DAYS, mostly waiting for rust to appear then boiling then steel wooling , then rusting then boiling then wooling then rusting then .... for about 10 days. most of the time I spend smoking cigarettes!

I'm waiting for Frenchy to chime in any moment now.

Do an internet search. somebody out there has done it. I myself have not. torches and shotguns are usually a bad mix though.

Thanks guys more to come on slow rust bluing these barrels later. I hope I'm not being a bore here. Now I'm working on my crescent for the rest of the day. That's a stock repair that is equally nasty. Today was a "shop day". I've been on vacation for a week and a half as the shop is closed for holiday.

Nicely done!
Are there trueness tests, and/or is the tube honed/polished afterwards?

You can hone them if need be, but then you are taking more material off. You really have to watch that. These did not need honing. I have the hones but I only use them in dire circumstances.
