76 Super Beetle Vert, what's it worth.
Found a nice one in a neighbors garage, restored in mid 90's, new top interior and paint, driven summers for a few years and then parked for the last six.
Paint is decent respray, it was covered in dust so very hard to judge shine, few chips here and there, not a windshield out job... Top is very nice, fabric stored upright, looks new (it is) Interior is all new white, no rips tears. No rust found, but have not been underneath yet with light ect, judging by overall condition I expect it to be nice. front trunk/ nose looked clean and rust/hit free. Stock motor, tidy looking, no huge leaks under, last started years ago. I'm going to try and snag this for a project/toy, I fully expect to put some $ to get it into shape, what does the brain trust say its worth? 76 is a bummer here due to emissions, but should not be that big of an issue. Non stock rims, solid drag type mags, didn't see the stockers in her garage. Ferg

Yeah, I know, I don't know the neighbor/owner, saw it just the one time, waiting for a response from her, so going over and taking pics is not a option yet...
I'm doing my research, and prices are all over the place on these, certainly right now as nothing seems to sell...

Check thesamba(dot)com for a idea on going prices.
Rust wise check the frame head (front suspension) and front firewall for holes and like a 914 scope out the rockers (longs). A rust free bug will have a definite ring when you knuckle rap the body, if it thuds it's got bondo. Do this to the bottom of every panel, double check the quarter in front of the "A" pillars. Check the floor pans with extra attention under the battery. Make sure all the top bits are there and in good shape as a complete top job is spendy. To me a non-op engine knocks up to $4k off the price.

Thanks Mark, I was hoping you would chime in.
I hope to get back and do a better inspection over the weekend. I agree on the non op part although she claims her son started it and drove it around the block a last summer.

76 Super Beetle Vert, what's it worth.
Years back they were hot and could not see anything decent under 10k but now you would be lucky to get 5 grand for it if it's really that nice. You want to buy my 72?

There are a few for sale here in the SE for between $2K & $5K and I'm in the heart of Vert country. Sad, I remember when there would bring $10+ all day long with a waiting list..

Thanks, Byron and Craig those are the figures I was using when I made my offer, it's been a week and I have not heard back, so I sent a follow up this AM...
I'm guessing she was slightly offended as I am sure she paid some bucks to have it redone... I really want it, as I don't have rear belts in the 911, and this would be sweet for weekend runs with the kids/dog ect, Miata is going up for sale this weekend, as good mileage as it get's I don't have the space for it this winter...

Buy it if you can get it for less than 5K, especially if it is a 49 state car without a catalytic converter. The stock fuel injection is very similar to the 1.8 914, Bosch L jet, sensitive to air leaks, especially around injector seals and along air boot. Check for rust under battery, bottom of doors and behind back seat too. You will need to sort it some, new fuel pump maybe, drain the gas, change the oil, transaxle, brake fluid, adjust the valves and go man go

I paid $2100 for my 72 in 1985 It was solid but needed everything done to it, top, repaint, complete new interior etc. I have about 3k parts in it and I did all the work, If I got 5k for mine I would be happy so no way do you ever get what you have in these things but I sure have a lot of fun with it!!

Don't know current values but when they stopped making them in '79, my Dad bought 2 of them and gave one to his wife and one to my Mom. (His ex-wife). My Mom got the red one and his (then) wife got a black one. The black was triple-black and the red had a white interior and top. They were beautiful cars new but I think I could out-run it in track shoes. It felt like it had 3 dog power.

Where are the cars now?
I had a 74 Super Beetle in high school. Drove it a million miles and through hell. Great little car. Quote:

Had a 74 super convert. The floor was rusted so bad you could watch the road go by. Supers are not what I would call the vest of the breed.

I paid $1800 for mine but it was a '69 coupe and this was around 1979. Hope that helps.

I'll also say between $2K, and $5k since it sounds like it's in decent enough shape to do a thing or two, and drive on with it. It should have rack and pinion steering, and maybe even front disk brakes ala early 924. Could be made into a nice little secondary car as long as parts that are of any quality are still somewhat available.
In late '03 paid $450 for my '73 Super without a motor, transaxle, or the original marathon wheels. The body had rusty buttresses, a busted windshield, and about a square foot hole where the battery used to sit, but the Sport Bug steering wheel, and seats were still there.

Course, as you can use 944 susp (F&R) on it with only minor mods and have a blast.

Ha! I didn't know that. I always thought early 924s' were 4x130. Thanks for the knowledge.
Yes, 944 stuff is a great alternative. Makes a Superbeetle into a totally different car. ![]()

yeah, pretty easy to make a Super Beetle like that a fire breathing sub 2000 lb monster. It is really pretty easy to add braces and a 944 suspension that would certainly make it a competent track car. I read an article once about a car similar to the one above handing a 911 its ass on a short track where the bad aero was not significant. I got a ride in one at a bugorama that a guy had put a built 914 setup in, made a subframe and put the motor in the back seat.
if I am ever in North Carolina, I will trade you a good bottle of wine for a ride in that blue car
