I'm having trouble with one in my desktop. I plan to replace with an A data. I did just do a firmware upgrade, so that may help.

I built up a i5 a year and a half ago with a 1.5 TB drive that the Windows Performance index notes is the weakpoint in the setup. I considered adding a Solid State drive like this.
So computer gurus (I can build them, but I have limits) what can you tell us about the benefits of a SS drive and how should it be implemented for a typical PC. What software belongs on it, and most important to me, what are the steps of moving/loading the softwre to where it belongs. I haven't moved on this because I don't mess with "good enough" and occupy days with frustration. Is it a matter of reloading windows 7 and other frequently used programs onto the SS drive?? Would the regular HDD be used for data only.......

A SSD upgrade is the greatest upgrade you'll ever make for the computer. The difference is night and day. It's ridiculous how much faster everything is. Photoshop opens in 3 seconds. I can open programs the second I see my desktop image while booting.
Buy a ~60GB for Windows and Applications and keep storage on a regular hardrive. It's the best $100 you'll ever spend. Though you do need Windows 7, XP is not recommended for SSD. Though do make sure you keep your data backed up. SSDs are still in their infancy stage of technology and people do have failures. I've been running mine for over a year, no problems yet.

I built a power machine for drafting work last year. After short period of time, I put in a 128GB SSD drive. Huge difference in speed! I also upgraded the video card and processor to the top of the line AMD unit of the time.
I built a 3 core tiny PC around a 128GB for my mother using an A-Data. So far there have been no issues with her machine. I have had a few small corruption issue. I did recently do the firmware change, so I hope that will fix the problem. New egg has a 256GB Kingston SSD for $376 after rebate. I've been planning to stick one of those in my laptop. Some of the A-DATA units come with a USB port for external use.

Be careful not to defrag an SSD. Does you absolutely no good at all (an SSD doesn't have to move the head or wait for a sector to rotate under the head - so it's as fast to access any sector as any other), and burns through the finite number of writes they're capable of.
I just bought my second - first was a 32GB Super Talent I've been very happy with, oddly, the one I just bought is the exact same 64KG Kingston...

Guess it was a popular deal, was only up for ~3 hours and it's already been yanked.
Price was $89.99 with a $40 rebate for $49.99 total.

For instance, you can get the 256gb version of that Samsung for under $350 all day long. |
