One of my shows. Operator didn't put out the outriggers and it toppled with no load on the hook.

So did they get fired or did you figure the experience learned would save them from future disasters?

I wish I had pictures of it. I was shooting a spot on a city bus. It was being towed while we where shooting.
They spent hours rigging 12K's (really big lights!) off the roof so they where six feet above and six feet out lighting down through the bus windows. Cable was run to the genie on the tow vehicle. After the whole morning spent rigging talent was in place, camera was ready and off we went. We got about 25 yards until the 3 12K's hanging off the roof hit a telephone poll, ripping the rig and half the bus roof off. No one was hurt but they did arrest the teamster driver.

It was before crane operators were required to have a license in CA. He didn't get fired. What was amazing was it only took out one light and a chunk of the curb. The top of the crane landed about 6" from the edge of the parking structure.

No excuse for that. Crane operation 101:
Know the weight. Know the radius. Look on the load chart. The sad thing is, that amateur could have moved the crane about 15 feet closer to the garage and that might have been enough to prevent the major fail. |
