Help me pick an E Reader
Decided to get a reader. Nook or Kindle or color Nook. Can you get magazine subscriptions such as Excellence and Motor Trend delivered to a reader?
Thanks, Bernie |

You might want to add iPad to your list. They have eBooks as well.
You can get some mags and newspapers, more coming on all the time. I have an older Sony eReader which is great but the iPad has so much more utility. |

Color Nook, put Android on it (mine runs CM7) and then install both Nook and Kindle apps...

Just bought one yesterday for my wife's birthday.....Color Nook (Refurbished off Ebay for $179)....Plan to jailbreak to Android, have 1,300 books in the Kindle format to put on it......I have Kindle app on my I-touch and laptop, so no need to buy a Kindle....

On a standard Kindle (black and white), I think you are stuck with Kindle stuff and possibly PDF and ePub formats. So you can't get Nook books on the Kindle (but I don't know that you'd need to). The standard black and white kindle has a battery that lasts a LOOOOOONG time. I think they say it'll average a month. The color kindle's battery won't last nearly as long. The color display uses power any time it's on where as the e-ink (black and white) only uses juice when you change pages. If you root the color and install regular Android, you can run Kindle or Nook (and I suspect, but have never checked that Zinio is available for Android). The iPad has access to the iPad book store, will play movies and music. There is also a Kindle app, a Nook app, and a Zinio App If you want to read books, and you want something smaller and lighter than a paperback book, then I would recommend the black and white Kindle. If you want a color experience (so you can get magazines) and you aren't afraid to tinker with PC like stuff (rooting Android is a linux thing, there are good instructions out there), then I'd probably recommend the color Kindle. I've heard that there are some functions of the color Kindle that aren't ready for prime time if you've rooted, but I don't keep up with that too much because I don't have one. If you want to do more stuff (as much as with a color android device), but you don't want to mess with the OS (no rooting) then get an iPad. I LOVE ANDROID. I would love to have an Android tablet. I got my iPad a year ago when there weren't really any good Android tablets. That's why I got the iPad. The iPad is really good. I have a bluray player. Some of the movies that I've purchased on Bluray had a "digital copy" that came with them. That means that I can legally rip the movies to iTunes. I then uploaded the movies to my iPad. I have a set of cables that allows me to play the movies from the iPad on any TV that's got RCA input. I have lots of books on my iPad, I have 3 magazine subscriptions on my iPad. I'm not afraid of rooting or jailbreaking but I just don't need to on my iPad. It really comes down to what do you want to do. I think if you want to read magazines, then you will have to get a color device. If you're going to get a color device, do you want to mess with the OS or do you want to just plug it in and go.

I've got a Kindle, which I really like. Screen is great, availability of material is terrific, battery charge lasts a very long time. Prices are right too - I bought complete works of Twain, Dickens, Robert Lewis Stevenson, Carl Sandburg, Walt Whitman and much more and still haven't spent $20. Right, it's all off-copyright material, and provides some great reading (working my way through Dickens' "Domby & Son" at the moment).
That said, I rather lust after an iPad. But not now. Not just now.

You can get the iPad version 1 from Apple for $349 and up. I don't think anything about the ver 2 was so monumental that I would feel the need to pay extra for one.

Our daughter loves her Kindle. We gave it to her for Christmas last year and she uses it every day...

Electronic readers are on the Christmas list for my kids this year. My only requirement is NO iPad. Anyone have arguments for one of the existing Android tablets vs the hacked Color Nook like id10t? Buy now or wait...?

google are aggressively trying to fix the fragmentation issue which can be significant depending on the device you buy. My daughter turned 11 this past Thursday. If I had to buy her something today I would get the Nook Color and root it. I prefer the 7 in size, just easier to handle and manipulate. 10' tabs to me are cumbersome. Again that's my preference, YMMV. Android has lot of promise but up till 3.0 it was only "ok" on tablets. Great for phones but did not scale up that well.
