CA out-of-state vehicle purchase
I'm looking at buying a vehicle from out-of-state. But the problem is that the seller is in a state (NH) that apparently doesn't issue titles to vehicles of a certain vintage. So all the seller has is a Bill of Sale--no official pink slip. Is that going to be a problem if I try to register the purchase here in CA?

Totally forgot about your home base, Todd. If CA DMV makes this difficult, I may have to register the bike in New England (I was originally thinking MA, but if you're offering up a NH addy...), and then tranfer registration to CA once I have ownership. That part is a minor PITA, as I only travel to New England once or twice a year.

not sure about CA, but I bought a vw rabbit pickup 7 years ago from a seller in CT (which I think has similar rules), and was able to register it in MD with a bill of sale. Took them a short while to research it (no titles issued for vehicles built in '81) but I was issued a title during the same visit to the dmv.

I think over 8 years old you don't need a title.

I can pretty much guarantee it will be quite a PITA. I have spent the last two months trying to register a car I bought in OR.
Make sure he gives you the current registration, NOT a copy of it. Go to a small town DMV if at all possible, nothing in LA county

IIRC If you are an AAA member they will do all the registration hassles for you ... may be worth the $50 membership just to do that...
