Fun car on the cheap - under $5K

Just for giggles if you had $5,000 to dump on a fun driver what would you buy?

well, for that price, a miata would be in good shape and would run reliably with minimal tinkering for a long time to come.

I would LOVE a 356... but we all know you can't touch one of those for $5K (that is running)

Of course the cheapest way out is to get my 944 running... but just printed out the instruction on changing out the water-pump... it is about a quarter inch thick plus once I get the 944 running it will be just a matter of time before it needs more work.

A Miata is high on my list... and a dune buggy has always been a dream of mine... always wanted an RX7 (was shopping for one when I bought the 944)

Corvette or Mustang would be cheap and easy to work on (as opposed to the 944)

But I'm just goofing around, slow day at work and daydreaming... not going to be buying anything anytime soon

Specifically a '74?

If I had it to do all over again, I would go with a '73. Pre-emissions requirements and without the big/heavy bumpers. But they are going up in price...

Fix what yah got if you like the way it drives - buying into another car is just picking up a set of problems the old owner didn't want to deal with. Only change money/time pits if you know you'll never like the car even if it works right.

Keeping the time/money pits similar also helps.

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE driving the 944... most fun to drive car I have ever driven.

But also first car I ever owned that is such a PITA to work on.

Wrenched on many of my dad's old GM cars growing up over the years... thus an old corvette would be a good choice... but wife hates vettes.

I'm guessing a Miata is an easy DIY car? (and the wife loves them)

And a air cooled four banger is an easy DIY engine... but don't know if I could even get into a narp 356 for cheap.
