How many of us hava a land rover?
I see a couple of Land Rovers in the "other cars" in the signature lines. I have a 03 Disco 2 SE7. My wife loves it even though it can hardly get out of its own way. Just wondering.

We had a 01 Disco SE and a 06 LR3 SE7 I liked the LR3 a lot more as the power and ride was better. They are fantastic vehicles off road and do very well in the snow, The only thing I thought was really poor was the terrible icing of the front windsheild. The LR3 was a little better but driving in a snow storm in a vehicle that can not keep the windsheild clear is not acceptable.I have put up with Land Rover's little quarks since I started driving them in the late 80's.After driving from Pa to CO and back towing a P-car in the snow and not being able to see out of the windsheild I am no longer driving or recommending one until they resolve the problem.TATA....good luck. For those who do not know Land Rover is now owned by TATA from India.

Recently sold my '94 Disco. Really a pretty trouble-free vehicle.
Impossible to get stuck, would go anywhere. Even our record 34" snow in the city, getting plowed in by the plows didn't stop it. Not much on acceleration, but would cruise all day at 85-90. Sold with 144k miles. And it had 'City Lights'! Last edited by tcar; 07-15-2008 at 09:23 AM.. |

I had a '96 Discovery SD and an '00 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. Loved them, hated them, would love a RR Sport, but it would probably cost me my marriage!

I had a 61 Series IIA 109" for many years.
Now we have a 95 Range Rover LWB. Which I am trying desperately to get rid of.

Yeah you got the love hate thing right, I had a 91 RR and it was awesome right up until it left me stranded with warped heads (WTF). I sold it to a mechanic a a LR dealer here. I've had my 01 disco for about three years and it's been a really good truck. The 91 was better offroad, it would go over and through anything.
Now I decided I wanted a truck with a warranty so I upgraded the background for the foreground...The disco's for sale if you want it. ![]()

I don't own a Land Rover but a good friend has a Disco on a 3" lift and remote reservoir Bilsteins. He also doesn't have any sway bars and it is more stable than my Jeep with sway bars!
I went with him on a Moab trip earlier this year. It was a truly impressive vehicle, we couldn't even lock the center diff (I forgot the wrench!) and only got stuck once. ![]() ![]() And a cool art shot I took on the trip...

I have a 96 disco which I bought as a salvage for 1,000 bucks from the insurance company. It has been pretty reliable--with small things breaking, but nothing which I wouldn't expect from a 12-year old beater with over 120K.
I took it from this: ![]() to this: ![]() It's okay, but I still miss this, which I sold when I put the Rover on the road:

I have owned three:
90 Range Rover SWB 99 Discovery 95 Range Rover Classic I still have the classic but it doesnt get much use now that my daughter drives it. (Big, slow and solid, just what the doctor ordered.) Owned a few 4x4's over the years and none compare to the RR's. Only problem is the reliability and PIA leaks that always comes with these trucks. After I'm done with this one, I dont think I would buy another except maybe a Defender to knock around, otherwise these trucks can become money pits real quick. Will agree, none better off road or in the snow and seating position is outstanding. Its a shame that LR can't figure out how to build an engine that does not leak or is more reliable.

I've had this 1994 Defender 90 since it was new. The car has done fairly well and is still running strong after 14 years. It hasn't been exactly treated with white gloves either. Lots of 4X4 time in the mountains of Colorado and in the desert around Moab, Ut.

) imported. The the three years I owned it we spend a lot of time out west as well and I always did great, especially after I installed dif locks. Frankly one of the main reasons I sold it was the height of the thing. I commute to DC and Crystal City and it didn't fit in almost all of the parking garages Since it was my DD that became an issue.I'll see if I can find a pic on the home computer.

The Buick V-8 on mine was solid with no leaks...ran great. The only mechanical problem I had in three years and almost 40K miles was the catalytic converters.

My V8 doesn't really leak either. I recently developed a leak at the rear differential. My Cat did go about 3 years ago, but 11 years out of a catalytic converter isn't terrible. The biggest mechanical problem with my car was a transmission pin that fell out and necessitated a rebuild of the transmission after 9 years of use.
During the winter I sure wished I had a hard top for mine, but in the summer I was happy to take the top off. I was living in Durango Colorado most of the time that I owned the car. So leaking tops was never really a problem. Rain in Durango is fairly rare. It does have a nagging leak from the upper corners where the top, doors, and windshield all meet. There is a hole there the size of a finger. My top was replaced with the later belt and rail system used on later D-90's though. It is certainly not a car for the highway or commuting for that matter.

When I'm not driving my 89 911 cab, my regular ride is an 04 Disco. Last year of the 911, last year of the series II. I'm very nostalgic!

Three so far...
First Disco was a 1997 Series 1. No major issues or complaints other than sunroof that would rattle like crazy when open. Was going strong until a minivan ran a red light and forced my wife off the road and into a large hydraulic utilities truck sitting in a parking lot. Insurance totaled the Disco. My wife and 2 year daughter were fine. Fortunate for the minivan occupants that my wife managed to avoid a direct center punch at 45 mph. I highly doubt the minivan occupants would have survived it.
![]() Replacement Disco was a 1999 Series II SE. I had some electrical issues with this vehicle which left my wife stranded 3 times in 2 years. It was a certified used LR so a call to roadside assistance resulted in speedy tow service. I forced my wife to sell this and move to a 2003 Expedition... ![]() Current Disco is a 2003 SE-7. This replaced the Expedition that my wife hated. It was a good SUV, powerful, space, but there was one in nearly every driveway. Wife wanted something different and longed for another Disco. I bought this used with 22K miles for 70% of the retail new price. It now has 57K miles and so far beyond standard maintenance costs I have spent $1000 fixing multiple oil leaks. The LR DVD player has been replaced 2x and is again not all that reliable but I have yet to talk to someone with a robust car mounted DVD. ![]() As already stated these things are a love/hate relationship. A real pleasure to drive, very comfortable, surprisingly stable on the road, and out of the ordinary. They are really nice inside with the dual sunroof and multiple roof windows. Low points are of course the not so stellar reliability (usually minor bits), oil leaks, and of course MPG. Wife is averaging 10-12 mpg around town and it drinks 91 Luckily the Disco is used mainly for short hops to the store and school. Edit - also forgot to mention tires. The stock GY on the 18" rims are ABSOLUTE KRAP! Switch them out for BFG AT or similar and it will transform the Disco. Unbelievable how much better it drives with decent shoes. Off road folks should trade the 18" rims for the 16" that you see on our 1999 Disco. More/better/cheaper tire options and better off road capability. We are still really happy with the Disco. Given the current market and where it is heading I don't know if I will ever sell it. I might throw on a couple lockers and turn it into a off-road toy in a couple years.
