I brewed another beer today...

It was cold and cloudy, so I brewed a 6 gallon batch of cherry wheat (my neighbors and family loves it). Here are a few pics. I couldn't find the camera, so I just used the iPhone...

Standard wheat beer recipe with crystal malt, wheat malt, Saaz hops, homegrown hops, 4lbs of tart cherries and 3lbs of cherry puree..

Should come out great! Working on a blueberry wheat right now myself...

I've been brewing a lot lately. Just had the last pint of an imperial IPA I brewed in July. Currently have a Belgian Tripel aging in the keg and a barleywine in the fermentor. Not sure what I'm brewing next, but I can bet it will be another high gravity beer! God bless homebrew and homebrewers!!!

Nice brewing rigs, guys!!

enzo1 09-05-2011 03:11 PM

yeah, that's serious stuff... drank home brewed beer wasn't too good... harsh. Don't think he was doing it right, but u guys look like u know what ur doing...

azasadny 09-05-2011 03:16 PM

Everyone seemed to like the "Imperial Porter" I brewed earlier this summer. I still have some in a keg in the garage reefer, but I wanted to brew a cherry wheat for those who don't care for the heavier beers.

Hard-Deck 09-05-2011 03:20 PM

I make beer and vino.
Favorite beer: Irish Stout
Favorite vino: Malbec

Hard-Deck 09-05-2011 03:21 PM

Nice rigs everyone! I'll need to try a cherry myself

Homebrew is seriously on the rise. I know a number of people just at work who also brew. I've got a citrusy Belgian almost ready to drink, and an espresso chocolate oak-aged stout that'll be ready in November. I'm ready for the next round of cider, just waiting for apples to come ripe! :)

I've been brewing for more than 15 years and I've brewed over 104 batches, mostly all grain. I've just restarted the hobby but I can't have alcohol (liver ailment), so I brew beer for others. I'll brew a mead this fall and I'm looking forward to that.

azasadny 09-06-2011 03:40 AM

The yeast isn't working, so I'll have to stop by the brewing shop and pick up another pack.... Good thing the shop is close to home!

Fermenting away... The yeast really got going after I took this picture...

I used to homebrew but haven't in about 5 years. There used to be a great supplier near me but he's since gone out of business. Where do you guys get your stuff? I also need to get a wort chiller, last batch I brewed it was a pain getting the temperature down to pitch the yeast.

azasadny 09-06-2011 04:21 PM

I support our local shop but before that opened, I used Williams Brewing (on the Internet) and was never disappointed. It's much more convenient to have a local shop!

Looks like we have similar taste in drinks.

Guinness Extra Stout.

I also have been on a Malbec kick , but still like anything Sangiovese best or with it in it as a blend.

azasadny 09-07-2011 07:58 AM

The garage smells great! The yeast is working hard and I may be able to keg the beer this weekend.

Rikao4 09-07-2011 08:30 AM

okay Art..
I know nothing about this..
the first to 2 pics confuse me..
looks like something is coming out of the pool ( L) spins around in the cherries &
goes were ?
heating element ?

It looks more complicatwd than it is. After boiling the brew, i put in 50ft of coiled copper and run cold water through and hot water that exits goes into the pool so as not to waste it. After cooling it down, the spigotcis opened and the liquid flows into the fermenter where the yeast is added. In this beer, 3 lbs of canned cherry puree also go into the fermenter. It's so easy even I can do it!

Nice! At first glance I thought you were siphoning from the pool, through the chiller, but I get it now. Brilliant way to put your waste water to work; enjoy a warm dip after brewday?

I've been brewing since 1993, full grain since 2000

Kegerator is empty, but soon to brew Imperial IPA and a Honey Amber.

My god! I didn't think of dumping the chiller water into the pool!

azasadny 09-07-2011 01:13 PM

Dan,
That's my "hillbilly pool heater"!

azasadny 09-07-2011 01:16 PM

Most of my batches have been all grain, but I'm just getting back into the hobby after taking several years off, so I thought I'd start with extract brewing. The gas line and the King Cooker allow me to brew outside and it is easier to clean up and I don't worry about boil overs or messes.

azasadny 09-07-2011 04:54 PM

I just checked and the yeast is going like crazy and the garage smells great!!!

Makes me wish I was not living in an apartment. Looks good but for now, I will have to get mine from the store.

cgarr 09-07-2011 05:17 PM

Is this something you can teach or learn to do or do you need to be really thirsty to figure it out?

Home brewing is easy... First rule of home brewing is keep things clean..

There is plenty of info available on the web that takes you step by step through the process..

When I started homebrewing about 20 years ago, I live in an apartment (CO-OP) which had the cheapest most pathetic stove you imagine... getting the wort to boil took forever, and venting the apartment were the most difficult...Also the equipment takes up space... which is hard to come by in most apartments

It can be done in an apartment, but its not the most ideal location

azasadny 09-07-2011 06:24 PM

Brewing is easier than reloading ammo and that's pretty easy! There is a ton of good brewing info on the web, no need to buy books and magazines to get started.

futuresoptions 09-07-2011 06:30 PM

Looks like it will be yummy!

azasadny 09-08-2011 06:18 AM

It sure smells fantastic!

My Pelican buddy really helped me out... John70t gave me a mess of hops to use for brewing. Here they are drying out. I'll use them in a few weeks...

Easy. The biggest challenge is organization and timing on your brewday. Palmer's "How to Brew" is the bible most turn to. Papazian's "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" is a bit more casual/warm&fuzzy.

GR is a huge beer town. There are probably a handful of clubs around that would welcome you to help out - once you see it done the instructions are so much more clear.

Remember that 5 gallons is only 40 pints. That's only one party or less than a month with two beer drinkers in the house.

And no, like reloading, you don't brew your own beer to save money. You just get to drink/shoot more!

azasadny 09-28-2013 04:55 AM

Yep, brewing is the easy part. Planning, getting everything ready and coordinating the activities are much more difficult, but not too bad.

Shuie 09-28-2013 05:11 AM

Awesome!

Brewing is easy. Controlling fermentation is not :)

Cleaning kegs...

I have 24 of these 5gal pop canisters that make great beer "kegs"! I'm polishing and cleaning them up, replacing old seals, etc...
