Can you backdate Corvettes?

It's fairly common now to backdate an SC/Carrera for an RS look. Similarly, can you take a 75 Corvette Stingray and easily backdate it to the 68-72 chrome bumper cars?

stomachmonkey 09-06-2011 02:52 PM

Oh lord why?

IIRC the 75' was a major POS. Wasn't that the 1st year with cats? 350 with less HP than your lawnmower.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-06-2011 02:57 PM

LOL, I'm sure it was, similar to 75-77 2.7s, but 350s are very easy to build up. The cars are dirt cheap these days, mostly a passing interest, there's a local car for next to nothing. I'd love a 68 convertible someday.

I think that would be difficult. The front and rear ends of the early C3 series were all one piece with the fenders and were hard fiberglass, but the later years (73<, I think) used soft plastic front and rear ends. The earlier cars were much prettier. I think for the '75 year, the more common and easier "upgrade" would be to the front and rear end from the '81 and '82 cars that had the integrated spoilers.

Because in most places the '75 can now be modified due to being too old to be emissions tested, so you can make a '75 scream like a '69, but then you're still left with a relatively ugly 'Vette. You'd want to spruce up the looks too.

Yes, it's easier to update/change the glass than it is to go from a short hood to a long hood 911. Both can be done.

This!

Hey Shaun, on 1 of those shows Saturday morning on SPEED they back dated a C6, (or something), to a split window 67 or so. Actually looked pretty cool.

masraum 09-06-2011 03:16 PM

It's not a bolt on like the '82 bumpers probably would be, you'd have to do a bunch of f/g work (which should be easier than welding). I think you could probably buy a whole new front end from one of the big Corvette houses. That would keep you from having to do much work on the front, but the back would definitely require attaching a new rear end to the rear fenders.

You don't want a '68. The webbing in the front fiberglas was too weak and allowed the front end to sag. They changed it for '69 - '72.

Dunno 'bout that, specifically, Shaun, but there's been numerous weird goings-on in the world of Corvette buffs. A quick Google reveals:

You mean, David? SmileWavy

I saw one of these on the road. I didn't get a REALLY good look, but it looked pretty cool as I drove past.

Apparently it's a 1962-look custom-made body put on a late model C5 car. It looked really, REALLY sweet in person. I half expected to see ZZ-top standing in the middle of the freeway shooting a video. The pictures below don't begin to do the car justice.

Here's the folks that make them.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-06-2011 04:26 PM

I've seen one of these in person. A true abomination. Really, every single line, proportion, dimension, whatever, is just plain wrong.
