actually, the common "french's" cheapo mustard you often see has tumeric added to make it yellow
real mustard is not very yellow - BTW mustard is not made from the flowers, it is made from the seeds which look about the same slightly yellowish tan color as... OTOH, tumeric is a health food Last edited by RWebb; 09-13-2011 at 11:10 AM.. |

Easy: go to Dijon, buy some mustard. I concur that Maille is a well renowed brand.

Consumer Reports did a mustard rating back in June. The top rated Dijon was Trader Joe's.

Thx, I can get Maille locally. Will run a test of that vs. the Trader Joes.

Mustard is yummy. It's by far the number 1 condiment. I like "regular" yellow French's or Ploschmans. I like Dijon, I like the stuff with seeds like the Maille above. I've never had bad mustard.

I'd go with Maille, since they've been making the stuff since the mid- 1700's. They make a zillion different varieties of mustard. I'd recommend their Moutarde Fine de Dijon . Or, you could go with the Moutarde Dijon Originale, or the Moutarde Dijon au Chablis 1747. These last two will be a lot stronger. If you peruse their website:
Maille - Epicerie Fine : Moutardes, Vinaigres, Huiles, Coffrets cadeau you'll note that they describe the relative intensities of their products. They also make the best cornichons I have ever had. Personally, I'd skip the ones with prominent seeds. That's a different mustard, for a different purpose. JR |

I use the Beaver Horseradish but their mustards just don't cut it - my hope is that one of the many local breweries will make some, like Sierra Nevada does.
I used to eat the Pommery all the time in the 1970s but don't see it around here anymore. Just got back from the local big-azz high end market "PC Markup of Chumps" no Maille there for some reason. |
