New York City Hotels - anything affordable?

Thinking of a short trip to NYC and DC this November to celebrate a Significant Birthday.

I was last in NYC in the early '90s and I am having extreme sticker shock at hotel prices. $440 for a Sheraton??

Does anyone have any recommendations for clean, quiet, needn't be fancy, reasonable accommodations in Manhattan (preferably in the <$250 range)

Or am I out of touch and it's actually reasonable to pay $441 for a night in a Sheraton?

Thanks!

d.

When I went to open our new resturant a couple months ago I stayed at the Verite for about $250ish / night.

It's not bad, but has some new hotel growing pains, AC wasn't balanced as well as it could be, they have some funny electonric gizmos for the lights, mattresses are a bit hard. It was across the street from the site though, so was worth it to me.

So there are definately places around, just have to dig them up a bit. I think they have all of 18 rooms, so they don't pop up on all the sites.

I know some very cheap places. And you can pay by the hour if you like.

The Wellington in mid-town. Affordable, clean, kinda old. Very well located for easy access up or down.

Hotel prices in November are much cheaper than they are during the summer. I've stayed at the Hotel Chandler, gorgeous boutique hotel in midtown for $125 to $200 per night in early March. Check the prices now and compare. I called them directly, they gave me a better price than Travelocity.

Millennium Broadway Hotel - Times Square

I always stay there when in town. Great location and helpful staff.

Courtyard Marriott Upper East Side. We stayed there a month ago and generally liked it. Also, look at places on the Upper West Side. We enjoyed staying at the Lucerne hotel last spring. Times Square sucks unless your a kid or deaf.

There is a 1:1 correlation between price, location and degree of overall shleaziness. For example, the old Hotel Pennsylvania, across from Penn Station, like $179. Cheap, right? Some friends stayed there and said the last time there was an update was around the time the Glenn Miller Band recorded "PEnnsylvania 6-5000." Which is still the phone number!

Anyway, try the smaller places, I recommend the Lucerne.

If it's worth $200 less, spend the night outside of town, and endure the drive back late at night listening to music.

Then use that $200 for a great meal.

To enjoy NYC to the fullest one should absolutely not plan on driving after an evening out.

Which Sheraton? Towers or Manhattan? They could be hosting a conference at that time. As another said its all about supply and demand. For 6 years I was in NYC every week and it can get real tough especially this time of year. People are back to work, trade shows and there sre TONS of tourists.

Check the other biggies direct first, Starwood, Hilton and Marriott then Hotwire. Make sure you aren't trying to book when the UN is in session or during fashion week etc.

Keep working at it you'll find something but NEVER stay at the Hotel Penn no matter how desperate you are. Don't stay in Newark either, you will regret it trust me.

ALSO, Don't forget to search this as well:

I stayed at the Hotel Chelsea a few years ago, it was pretty cool and not too expensive.

I have never spent a night in this place, but when I worked on the Queensboro (59th St) Bridge, I watched a "no tell hotel" being converted into a pretty nice place. You get a really nice view of the NYC skyline from here...

Also if you like Indian food, there is a 24/7 Indian diner right around the corner "5 Star Diner" The cabbies all eat there... great Dosa and Masala

Its a cab ride away from mid-town, or you can walk across the bridge and you are within walking distance of subways, or can flag a cab down... just walk to Rock Center, Times Square etc..

Rates for NYC seem pretty reasonable.. I checked rates for mid November and rooms go from $200-340/night..

I stayed at the Plaza recently, didn't cost anything. Nice place with bell-hops too. Room service with fresh orange juice. Limo waiting outside to see the sights of NY. Carrige ride through Central Park. Oh wait a minute, that was when I was 10 years old with my parents. Nevermind.
