New York flooding
Definitely one of the worst drives ever for me.
I took the "scenic" route to my stepson's place near Boston last week. I was cruising eastbound on I-86 when I came across a sign saying the highway was closed ahead between a couple of exits. I didn't think it was a big deal, I've dealt with closed roads before. BUT - the interstate was closed because it was flooded due to the effects of Irene and Lee, which meant all the other roads in the area were flooded too. We got dumped off the highway in the little town of Sayre, PA which was surrounded by water, though there was no one to tell us this. Wish I had pictures, but I had my hands busy staying on the road. I drove by houses with water up to the top of 1st story windows. Saw a newish Corvette with only the roof and tail above the water. It took four hours to discover every route out of town was flooded. By then water was rising on the on ramp back onto I 86 west. It was about a foot deep. I was able to get through it in my truck, but I passed half a dozen flooded cars on the ramp and the water was rising. It took another 3 hours to get around the flooded area and to the on-ramp to I 88 20 miles away - which was also closed. I had to drive 70 miles north to Syracuse, then east on I-90 to get to Boston. The trip out took two days - 26 hours in the truck and over 1000 miles. The trip home (on I 80) took 14.5 hours and was 690 miles. It was a hellish trip to say the least.
