Yessir...to me, image is everything!

I know a lot of people who care a great deal about image, and most of them would wear every item you listed. The wheel has turned - you're hip again!

I care about performance and build quality. If I cared about looks, I sure as heck would not have bought a 914

No charge for this advice!

I'm glad for that. Because it's worth exactly what I paid for it.

These very qualities would go toward making the McLaren the rare bird of this type of car. One that would be a pleasure to drive on the road, and possible to enjoy for more than an hour once in a while

I've stolen that term because it makes such sense.
A "500 mile car" should be able to carry 2 people and their luggage rapidly, yet in comfort, for a single 500 mile drive. Upon arriving at their destination, these people should be able to enjoy a few hours of planned activity before retiring.
Any car that does this is a good design, In my opinion.
The great irony in this quote is that there are precious few 500 mile cars better than a 911, especially a newer one.

Prius does that.

but what I really want to know is how many of you would buy a car that looks like a clown shoe?

also, what if it is an Fcar? and Acura? a BMW?

Here in SLC land a well turned out Stang garners more looks that a Pcar.

Its true. Last 3 GF's I've had while owning the 911, One said she is a camaro girl, and why did I buy a 911, when I could have bought a new camaro (she was confused on what I paid) and one was a mustang fan, and could careless my 6 banger has 12 plugs, and a mechanically activated spoiler.

BTW - did you have a red 911 at one time?

A car is the extention of the person who drives or owns it! If you have unlimited money and can buy anything, some need to show that, others don't. We all have been blown off by cars that looked like junk and ran like stink! For me, it how the car makes me feel looking down the hood just crusing along. Or when I brake hard, stick it in the corner and hammer the power as I pull out of the turn. But the thing that has remained with me is the sound of my first '66 911 in late 1965. Going from a 356 to a 911 with six webbers opening up about 3800rpm>WOW! Or the feeling of your first 930 when the turbo(s) kicked in>BIG WOW.
You are what you drive, and most of us drive a Porsche! That speaks for itself!

Depends on the 911. My old one has NO air, just an AM/FM single speaker radio,
plus the beefed torsion & sway bars meant it would beat you to death on a long haul... My current ride is just as fast, and one hell of a lot more comfortable.

Ah the BMW Z3 coupe a car for today, polarizing. Some love it some hate it, (clown shoe?) I happen to fall in the camp of those that love it. Sporty and utilitarian at the same time.
Yours looks nice in that shot.

Cheers Richard

But you're such a textbook case Paul.

Denial, transference, cognitive dissonance.

I could go on. But then I'd have to charge you. ;)

Agreed.

The boys on Top Gear (other than Clarkson) have repeatedly made this point.

I have driven my 997 S flat out all day at least a dozen times. It's a brilliant long-distance tourer IMO.

I'd agree with that - I think the current 911s are a nice cross between GT and sports car, though I still prefer the 928S4 for serious distance work.

Thanks, gents. I think the Z3 coupe is a good subject for the discussion at hand. I personally don't think the car is beautiful, but it does have style. It's got a squat, purposeful, and individual appearance. At the time it was released, when BMW had the E36, E39, and E38 doing the "1-sausage, 3-lengths" thing, it was an extraordinary break from the norm.

Once again displaying the same reasoning skills as the guy in Spinal Tap who responds "But these go to eleven"

I for one am dumbfounded that a car made in 2008 is as fast as and actual more comfortable than one made in 1973. It can't be.

What an incredibly weak argument. Obviously just about any car built in the last decade is going to be faster/more comfortable than cars built 40 Yrs ago. Got any other groundbreaking discoveries?

drcoastline 09-20-2011 03:57 AM

Since I am not a proficient race car driver most cars are way past my driving talents. So I will never be a driver to push the vehicles to their limits. I think most people care about looks to some degree. That's why we paint or buy our cars in certain colors. Try our clothes on before we buy them and have mirrors in our homes. Landscape our homes, etc. I say because if we look good we feel good. Is it all about getting attention? I say no. But we all like some attention and like to be complimented. No one is going to convince me that you don't feel good or get a sense of pride when some one comes up to you and says. Hey nice car! or you get a thumbs up at the stop light.

That being said. I love the 959. It is still one of the most capable cars ever built.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316519145.jpg

But....

I would take the Ferrari 288 GTO every day of the week over the 959.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316519209.jpg

I looked up the two cars in the OP and to me the two cars are very similar visually and quite boring looking actually. So in that case why not take the car with better performance? Just buy the Mclaren in red if you want more attention.

tevake 09-20-2011 05:51 AM

Just buy the Mclaren in red if you want more attention.[/QUOTE]

Its funny when you said that cause earlier this came up.

QUOTE=Flieger;6261556]I think the McLaren looks good enough that the performance wins for me. I like technology and I don't care if it is utilitarian on the inside like most German cars used to be. I don't like flamboyant on the outside so the Ferrari seems a little over the top. I don't want an ugly, car though. Uninteresting is alright.

And I was thinking at the time that the Ferrari would be interesting to see in Magnesium or one of those other cool colors that came up in the fan color thread a while back. Plus add some tint to the headlights, then you are on to some thing.

Cheers Richard

PS can anyone foto shop that for us?
