Pinzgauer versus Unimog?
Which reigns supreme? Just finished watching Thor and the movies Pinzgauer is very basses.
I will own an ultimate 4x4 oneday. |
I wonder how our Humvee will hold up against them? I know nothing about the Humvees. Are they full of electronic controls or are they mechanical?
|
The Humvee might stand somewhat of a chance....
The H2? no way in hell will it stand up..... |
I am talking about the military ones, not the posh BS for the rappers.
|
Screw em both, you want a 101FC
|
A well setup FJ60/62....

Pinzgauers and Unimogs are very different beasts. Which one reigns supreme depends upon how one measures supremacy. Are we talking about the volcanic rocks in Johnson Valley, or the Tank Trap at the park outside Hollister? Or maybe somewhere else?
At the end of the day, the ability to cover difficult ground comes down to which one has the most articulation, gear ratio and torque. Oh, and also conditions, and which tire the contestants are wearing. |
They look like they can tip over so easily. The center of gravity look so high. I have seen first hand what a Uni-mog can do in the jungles of Meseeco as a rider not a driver. I wish I had a crack at driving that thing there.

This thread is worthless without pictures.
How about a well set up Synchro Westy? :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316404208.jpg |

Are Pinzgauers as versatile as Unimogs ? I have seen Unimogs with all sorts of attachments doing all sorts of useful things. That seems to be a big plus for the Unimog for sure. |
That one is not a Westy, but there are Westies like that.

I don't think a Syncro will do as well off road as the other vehicles mentioned. It would be better on the highway tho.
Yes, the high Cg means they are much more likely to tip over - one thing to help with that is an adjustable ht. suspension. It would be interesting to see details of the various drive systems used if anyone has pics -- the Hummer uses geared drive wheels which are driven from the top. The problem is that a drive thru the center of a wheel (e.g an axle with CV joints) really reduces your ground clearance. The ultimate solution was invented a long time ago by Guess Who and uses electric wheel hub motors. |
Tank treads are better than anything. No need to worry about high-centering.

I have done alot of off-roading in a Pinzgauer and while very capable, the Unimog will (pardon the pun) climb all over it!

I love 101FCs!!!!

I'm a full on Pinz fan. Mogs are fun, but they're just so overdone. I love the smaller, far more agile Pinz. Sure, it's running independent suspension, but that only slows down people who are TOLD that it sucks offroad. Those of us who have abused independent suspension vehicles know that they're perfectly capable of ripping it up, it just takes a bit more driver skill.
Also, only one of the two has a Zeinith carbed, air cooled engine! Look familiar? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316642147.jpg I also think that a Pinz can be stripped down a bit more for cruising the strip on a Friday night...take off the doors, top, rear hatch, etc and you have an open air sex-machine! I do love me some 710M goodness! |
I had a Unimog and it was very capable, have been to some rides where some Pinzies were at and they performed well too. The Pinzie seems to be a lot easier to drive and handle. Been half way thinking about selling my Gamagoat and getting one.

The Pinzgauer has all ind. suspension and hydraulic diff. locks (so you can lock while moving); also has a backbone chassis tube which I've seen pics of, but not sure where.
They also have portal axles to give extra clearance - anybody know what the gnd. clearance actually is? As you can see, they are a lot bigger than a Syncro Vanagon, and a lot worse on the hwy, but a lot better off-road. If 6x6 is not enuff, you could always get a Piranha - they are 10x10. |
the Volvo C303 also has portal axles and diff locks
