This bride built herself a Porsche from an old VW for her wedding

For her wedding day, British bride Megan Ashton wanted to arrive in a Porsche 356. Unable to afford one, she did something better — she spent six years hand-building this replica from a thrashed Volkswagen Beetle donor car.

After buying the '69 Beetle for about $300, Ashton spent the next six years stripping it to its chassis, installing a new engine, attaching Porsche body panels and fabricating an interior to match an original Porsche. Only the bottom chassis and wheels remain from the original Beetle.

The transformation cost an additional $6,300 — but the car is probably worth far more than that even as a replica.

The 26-year-old worked round the clock to transform the battered 1969 VW, which she bought for £200 as a student more than six years ago, into a sleek £25,000 sports car.

Lt Ashton, a Royal Navy aerospace engineer, spent £4,000 and two years getting the car up to scratch after her husband Rob Ashton, 26, a captain in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, proposed in 2009.

The bride, from Amesbury, Wiltshire, stripped the Beetle to its chassis before fitting larger cylinders and pistons to the engine.

Mrs Ashton, whose father Viv Beal, 54, runs a garage in Barnstaple, Devon, said: ‘I know people might think it is quite unusual for a girl to be interested in cars but I have always grown up surrounded by it.

‘My Mum and Dad have been buying various parts for the car for birthday and Christmas presents for the past six years – so I am looking forward to getting some girly treats now.’

Her father added: ‘We’re all into classic cars and it was a very proud day for all of us. Megan’s Porsche replica is her pride and joy.’

I'm 20 and and I actually know a couple of girls that can, and can even change the oil in their vehicles... But I know lots of farm girls too...

I taught auto mechanics at the high school level for years. I had perhaps 3 girls as students who could do this sort of thing.One girl grew up on a farm and went on to University in Mechanical Engineering, another grew up with a junk yard operated by the family and the third girl's mother was a plumber. They are out there but the trades are still mainly men

Bull honkey!!! When I tell guys I want to buy an old Porsche and want to work on it myself, learn all I can about cars, they give me this look like whatever. Yeah, you sit here and say you want a woman like this but a lot of guys question a girl that wants to do it. That why I just have kept quiet and read/research myself.

Be nice and open to girls who want to learn about cars. Don't make fun of them or tease them if they don't know something. Don't question them about why or ask "have you EVER worked on cars before?"

Give them credit that they even have the balls to attempt to tackle it. Ok, that's all. I'm just venting. Most guys on this PP forum are pretty nice. I have just gotten the opposite reaction on the street. And just for the record, this woman is my hero too. I would love to have a 356. Maybe I need to tap HER for her knowledge...

The deal is, the guys HERE are mostly car guys (including getting dirty, not just driving). WE would like this sort of girl assuming she's also feminine. I think Tomboys rock, a girl that's definitely a girl, but isn't scared to get dirty or break a nail, and doesn't have to spend a ton of time getting ready all of the time.

There are plenty of guys who are NOT car guys. If a guy doesn't know anything about cars, or doesn't care about cars, or the depth of his appreciation is "it's cool", "it's fast" or "it's a chick magnet", he's not going to be interested or understand if a girl is interested.

The deal is, you have to understand and approach the right guys about your interest.

The one time that you might find an exception about a guy that is into cars and doesn't want you to be into them too is if he's trying to hard to appear masculine and your interest would interfere with that. That's alright, they probably have little peepees anyway or they wouldn't be having to prove anything.

....that got my attention just as much as her build of the car .

FWIW; we're out there...the world over...we gals who love cars and don't mind getting our hands dirty under them. Oh and Steve...I got really good at NOT breaking a nail or ruining a good manicure; our guys in the shop were amazed by that .

The real truth is that most guys cant HANDLE women who work on cars. Most guys need to get over the whole "shes invading our space" thing. Or they complain about not being able to find a girl who is into all this stuff. B.S. They ARE out there. Go to a rockabilly show sometime.

My wife works on cars, MAKES tools, rides motorcycles, plays roller derby and is tough as nails. All the while she retains her femininity and enjoys it. I'm in heaven every day and can't comprehend a relationship where I'm questioned over buying tools.

Personally, there is NOTHING sexier than an independent woman who works on her own car/bike/whatever.
