Smith vs Smith. The total is up to 8 or 9 people that have been "Shanny-banned" and the season is still a week away. |

Hey Guys
Given the central theme of this thread is "new NHL rules", how about some of you weigh in on No touch Icing. I think "Grapes" has been a longtime supporter of this rule change in one form or another. As most of you guys know, the slightest touch of an opponents stick blade on your skates as you are both trying to get the puck first can result in some very unpleasant & bloody dangerous situations as one or both of you end going into the boards awkwardly. Case in point, a young Edmonton Oiler ended up with a shattered femur (a very serious injury) as a result of he & an opposing player's efforts to touch the puck first, in an exhibition game yet! I for one favour a rule change but with some practical considerations with respect to game situations. It would, in all likelihood, have to be a referee's judgment call & all of that. What do you Gents think? Cheers JB |
Hybrid icing from NCAA will eventually be adopted. I don't like it, but it will be in place, I think next season.
The real answer is a 20 game suspension for tripping or hitting on an icing. 'Accidental' injuries are the exception, they are usually the result of a careless check or stick. |
Icing is an important part of the game. I have seen the extra hustle of a player make the difference of a goal and even a game. No-touch is more wussification. I think 1990 is onto something (even if he loves Gary Bettman) by making the penalty more severe when purposely injuring a player during an icing race. Part of the game is the risk of getting hurt. Left unto itself, the "for the sake of safety" mantra will create no checking hockey. Nah.

Nix on the no touch icing. But how about enhanced penalties for infractions occuring during the chase? The chase is important ,as stated hustling to get the icing called or cancelled can make a big difference. So maybe obstruction, interference, tripping, barding etc all get an extra two minutes of sin bin?
|
Maybe it could "called" (whistled down), by the ref's or lineman's, before it get dangerous...
Of course, we would be complaining just about every call :D:rolleyes: |
If we want to stop play "before it gets dangerous" then send out the ice girls until the All-star game.
|
One more vid from Shanny on what he considers good clean checks. The second half of the vid shows some hard checking to prove the game isn't going soft.

Thanks JJ. I was keeping it to one per day. What's a 4th line Hockey Troll got to do to get a fight going around here?
|
How can you get back to run and gun of the 80's?, stop the butterfly goaltender.... it's all just a bandaid, hey I have one, enforce the rules that you already have!

Well, what do you think?

"When you give an excuse to the players not to hit, they will not hit"
"Enjoy this folks. You're never ever going to see this (quality of hockey) again" No. He didn't go far enough! Look at the video above and listen to Mike Milbury. The NHL is enacting the wussification of hockey. As I said before: If we want to stop play "before it gets dangerous" then send out the ice girls until the All-star game. |

Regarding retired players and their 'issues'? Absolutely. He went way too far. How is it wrong for retired fighters to say the game needs to change? Criticizing the game is Canadian sport in itself. Criticising the players in that manner is not. |
