Tobra and I did lunch in Sacramento, Ca
A little late in posting. Donna and I flew to Sacramento and drove to Reno/Carson City to look at possible retirement areas. Looks a lot like Santa Clarita, Ca where we live. Housing is about 1/2 of the going price in Reno. No income taxes, low sales taxes, but I think I'll keep looking. Donna wants a house on water, maybe we'll look in Tennessee or something. Don't know. We've got about 7-9 years to decide. Anyway, met Toby at the Firehouse restaurant, a 150 year old or so ex-firehouse that was converted into a very, very high end and nice restaurant. We met on Thursday at around 1:00 PM just after we arrived. Lunch and company was excellent as was the last time we met with Toby about a year or so ago in San Francisco. He is the tall guy.

Keep us up to date on your search. My wife and I would like to return to living on/near the water.
Based on family (grandchildren) we will be staying on the East Coast. But, I'd like to know your opinion of different areas that you have looked at. |

How do you feel about Texas?
You could get a place at Tahoe on the water, but I don't know that you could get enough for a kidney to buy it.

There is a reason location is everything in real estate. My Dad's wife (my Mom passed in 1990 and he remarried in 1995) loves to move...they have lived in the mountains outside of Charlottesville, VA; Bend, Oregon; Monument, CO; Lake Telico, TN, and are now in Fairfield, Ca. He hated Tennessee: Loved the people, Knoxville is good, but the weather sucks and you live a long way from a lot of things of interest. Do not underestimate the horror of humidity. I really like Maryland, my farm is on the water and it was a stellar, great place to raise kids. But three/four months out of the year it is air you can wear 24/7. I hate it. My wife and I are looking for nice college town in the North West, mountains or water are essential.

Yeah, Donna wants low humidity, which means pretty much West of the Rockies. I went to High School in Oak Ridge, TN, so I know about humidity. Maybe we'll visit the Flagstaff, AZ area. Not much water though.

Hugh,
Flagstaff, Prescott, Payson and Wickenburg are very nice places to retire... Am with you and the humidity issue, and already have my place picked out in one of the above! Joe A

Get two places, one in AZ for winters and one in Montana for summers. That would be excellent!

That is exactly my tack...I don't need much to be happy physical plant-wise. A garage both places, a garden for Bec, well sorted, views.

I have seen it snow on the 31st of May in Helena Montana, so its still chilly up there then.
That said, the 31st of May is about the time when it starts to get pretty warm down here in the desert, so a casual drive up North about this time would work fine. Stay there until 1 October or so then return South. The best of both worlds!

You could come and live out here in the colonies. Water everywhere. Australia is warmer, but in NZ you don't have to pay for the aircon. Do the occassional small contracting job for Mr. Jackson...

Sidney,
Please do some homework before posting! The POME's are in Oz, otherwise known as Australia. Bill is in NEW ZEALAND, a totally different country and not where the convicts from England were used to settle the country years ago... Now, use the internet an figure out what POME stands for! Joe A
