sorry gotta ask: do nursing students need to poke/probe each other "clinically?

i was wondering.

i assume they need to find a vein with a needle. are they jabbing holes in each other as guinea pigs?

rectal thermometers?? come on! must be one hell of a lab session if they do.

i know dental students clean each other's teeth.

stomachmonkey 09-26-2011 02:00 PM

My sisters a Dr.

They had to get naked and examined by each other.

porsche4life 09-26-2011 02:06 PM

Dated a nursing student for a bit. And yes they stick each other with needles. I think that other bit they reserve for practicing on needles.

I know here on campus that all pharmacy students get free flu shots administered by the upper classmen learning about innoculations.

Don't ask me about proctology school.

CarreraDan 09-26-2011 02:36 PM

This is a funny thread. Yes in nursing school we did practice IV's on each other, we also did nasogastric tubes too--both were strictly voluntary but everyone did it. We learned physical exam techniques and practiced them too, however everyone kept their clothes on--we guys did take off our shirts. Trust me you would not want to see some of the girls in my class without clothes.

My fiance is finishing residency this year and things were different in her medical school. They actually had people (volunteers) come into lab for them to practice on and didn't stick or examine each other. Both of us learned most of the invasive procedures during clinical where you are taught how to do stuff by a more experienced person, the old see one do one approach. Sorry to disappoint you guys but that is how things are done now. Most nurses learn IV's during the ICU rotations, unconsious people tend not to mind as much as the ones who are awake:D

daepp 09-26-2011 02:40 PM

When my brother's 2 year old got juvenile diabetes, he was forced over night to learn how to give shots (not IV's). They gave him a grapefruit, then he practiced on me (with saline). They things you do for family...

Mark Henry 09-26-2011 02:42 PM

I met my wife in hospital...do you want to see what I stuck her with?

18 holes a day...

azasadny 09-26-2011 04:46 PM

Yep! When I was a corpsman in the USN, we started IV's on each other, inserted nasogastric (NG) tubes, etc...

id10t 09-26-2011 04:53 PM

When they do IV certifications, yes, they start a line or four. First on dummies, then on each other, then on real patients. When my wife did her IV cert several years after nursing school (LPN, did the cert for CEUs) I got volunteered...

Nathans_Dad 09-26-2011 04:59 PM

When I was in medical school we started IVs on each other but that was it. Everything else was done with people who were paid to be "test patients". I never understood the men and women who would allow 10-15 different students to do rectals, pelvics and such on them. They couldn't have been paid much...

Normy 09-26-2011 05:46 PM

Oh you're making me horny-

tweezers74 09-26-2011 05:58 PM

I graduated from nursing school in 96'. We didn't start IVs on each other but we did give each other flu shots. For our first big test, we had to do a full body assessment on another person in our class. This included a breast exam but nothing else invasive. Female classmates had to volunteer for the male classmates. Yeah, our study sessions were interesting. We had to keep the blinds closed. ;)

I saw an article on that subject a few years ago. The guy who was the "subject" made pretty good money at it, especially when he got a reputation as being a good subject.

I have no clue where or why I came across it, probably linked of reddit.

Let me guess: things didn't quite go back to how they were before, and that's why they call you "Gassy".

Tobra 09-26-2011 09:09 PM

In Podiatry we practiced on each other. I am not as bad as I once was, but when on the pointy end of the needle, I get the vaso-vagal response(faint)

We have this injection lab, and everyone wants to see Toby bounce his melon off the floor.
At that point, I am about $100G's into it, and more than somewhat concerned, I speak to the nurse who is the OR supervisor, who asks if it happens when I am giving or getting the shot, which I had not really thought about much. "When I am getting the shot."

"Dont't worry about it."

This si something I would tell someone when perhaps they actually ought to be worrying about it, so I ask her to help me out a bit more, as I am a bit dubious about the "don't worry about it." She explains what is happening to me, fight or flight response, and goes on to tell me I will probably be quite good at giving injections, as I will have more empathy for my patients.

Turns out, she was quite right. I have been told by numerous people that I give the most painless injection they ever had.

A nurse with 30 years experience turns out to be right, go figure.

dentist90 09-26-2011 09:37 PM

In dental school we did give each other anaesthetic injections. Very light lunch after that one.

Now if you'll just slip on this paper gown the dentist will be right with you. He's very thorough with his exams. :D

livi 09-26-2011 10:50 PM

How do you figure I turned out a fluffer..

Just a couple of examples during med school.

Gynecology examination practice: Voluntary women were payed to get examined by a long row of med students lining up to poke around like clumsy teenagers on their first date. The professor standing beside watching your technique. " Watch your thumb! That hurts!" Next!"

Rectoscope examination on each other was suggested but only a few of us would do it (not yours truly!).

Rikao4 09-27-2011 06:09 AM

I'm just like T..
I can wade thru blood & gore and fell nuthin..
come near me with a needle..
lights out..

Rika

Joeaksa 09-27-2011 06:58 AM

During our EMT/Paramedic we did like the above and practiced on oranges or grapefruits, what ever was handy. Never used it and hope its never needed, like the rest of my medical training. Am much better pulling engines or wings apart!

Tobra 09-27-2011 07:34 AM

I practiced suturing on pig's feet
Later, they were soup
Drunks move around too much

That's what she said

"Are you in yet?"

GH85Carrera 09-27-2011 08:07 AM

I donated blood again yesterday. I always watch the needle stick. That is a big needle. The nurse always suggests I turn my head, I tell em I just want to make sure you are doing it right.

I have never stuck a needle into a vein, but I have had it done to me many times after 35 years of donating blood.

Tobra 09-27-2011 10:22 AM

trick is to stabilize the vein with your finger or thumb

I have seen my wife start IV's on people that I swore had nothing there.

When her mother got her hip fixed, they were messing around, could not get a line, even with a dinky 22ga on a butterfly. They stepped out to find an anesthesiologist to try, she started an 18 ga they would not even try to get that they left on the table. She had it all hooked up when they got back.

Very handy to have someone like her around.

Where I worked in a hospital, the phlebotomist that was always called for very old, very young, or just plain bad veins to do blood draws was a reformed heroin user... if he couldn't tap someone, no one could.

looneybin 09-27-2011 11:46 AM

I've poked a couple of nursing students (well, dental hygienist) does that count?

I had to give my (ex)wife injections to get her pregnant and was taught using an orange.

I know how bad all of that sounded...

every time i give blood they miss or the vein rolls
i warn them ahead of time and they never listen
then the enevitable, digging in my arm.

LeeH 09-27-2011 09:33 PM

I've been donating blood for year and have always been told I'm an easy target. On one of my draws last year there was a group of trainees and it was my option to let one of them stick me or not. I figured that since I was an easy target it wouldn't be a problem. However, she went right through the vein and out the other side. Her supervisor and I both tried to reassure her the it was no big deal. When she was offered the chance to try the other arm she refused. I did leave a very impressive bruise!

A930Rocket 09-27-2011 10:05 PM

My wife has been an ICU RN for over 30 years. She can get a line, needle, etc in anybody.

I've had a few trial and errors giving blood. Most get it, but some have to poke a few times. Hasn't been as easy now that I'm older. My iron is always border line as well.

vash 09-28-2011 07:42 AM

wife just showed me her syllabus. there is clearly a day reserved for ANAL temp readings..

hahhahahah. she is nervous..ahhahah..i wonder if she could bring a guest.

my friend told me they hired out test subjects for these things.

red-beard 09-28-2011 08:04 AM

My neice jsut finished nursing school and now is in her "practical" year. She did mention attending colonoscopies, and it was pretty funny the way the tube comes back out.

brown?

red-beard 09-28-2011 08:07 AM

It partially pushes out on it's own.

I expect there is some brown matter, but you're supposed to be pretty well cleaned out by then...

One reason I watch is on one of my early donations they used a defective needle. It had a barb on it. When she pulled the needle out it hurt like hell. It had a big chunk of me attached to it. I had a huge bruise.

We had a thread in the past about do you want the old battle axe nurse that has done it for decades or the hot young beginner nurse. I chose the old battle axe and let the hottie do some other patient and I can watch her from across the room.

Drdogface 09-28-2011 08:32 AM

We had surgery dogs to work on that came from the local shelter. We did different procedures on them every week. I had to do it but hated every second and really felt sorry for those poor pooches. I still think about it from time to time and that was over 40 years ago.

I'm definitely on my second cat that had its vocal cords damaged, probably from being used for intubation practice when it was a kitten.
