BMW M5, fake engine sound through the stereo

At least, that's what this article says.

New BMW M5 fakes its engine noise for your pleasure

According to the article BMW has a digital signal processor in the stereo that's connected to the engine ECU so it can simulate engine noises for the folks in the car.

Very sad.

I don't know if BMW is really doing this, but this sort of thing has been around as an add-on kit for a couple of years. So your Prius can sound like, say, a top-fuel dragster, or a P-51.

Needless to say, it takes all kinds. Judging from the cruel things I see people doing to new Bimmers here in the Lost Angeles area, which has pretty much become a taste-free zone, I can well imagine that there actually are people who would buy this. Go figure.

Sometimes I think it's a bit too loud...but since the factory spent million$ to tune it to the movie sound, I've learned to like it...stock Bullitt exhaust...

I think the M5's system is a bit more sophisticated than the stuff that you're talking about, but that doesn't make it any less cheesy.

I can't remember where I read it but BMW is not the only one looking into this. Because of increasing regulation on noise from the tailpipe the automakers are having to make their exhausts ever quieter.

And yet there must be something written in stone saying that Harleys shall not have mufflers...

Sorry, but damn...I'd rather have my car's sound system play only the music I choose...

I wouldn't be surprised. BMW has been hiding their performance under layers of unreliable technology for nearly a decade now. Want your M5 to be a real sports sedan? First you have to work through your iDrive pages to properly set up the car (system) then press a M button to get all of your power. It's a computer on wheels, and what's the fun in that?

i want F14 tomcat noise, you know the sound as they spool up before a cat launch..when i'm sitting at the red light.

It will compliment Highway to the danger zone by Kenny Loggins... Obviously.
And i'm sure i will break my record time of 40 minutes to work by at least 20 minutes

Heck, why even go to work? Just blow up the place with some iDrive-launched missiles from your driveway.

By the time you get a missile lock with iDrive, the bogey will have run out of fuel and crashed by itself.
