something less redneck. Before that we had a 06 silverado 2500 hd ext cab. It was cramped though.

This is next: Putting a 5 speed in it, some suspension mods, engine work, rust work, tires and paint.

This one will be my Son's when he graduates from college. I'll get three years of joy then move on to the next, interesting thing.

I wish Whippedpuppy could hold on to his Targa for a few years:D

Jeff, congrats on the 4Runner. I saw a number of diesel swap threads on ih8mud, pretty much unanimous praise for how much it improves the truck. I wonder if he used a GM diesel V8 from the '80s? I recall seeing a few of those, if I recall correctly they bolt in pretty much the same as a SBC and using adapters that are readily available.

I don't know where it comes from, but it had very low miles on it according to him. A Humvee maybe?

I really beat the bushes on this one, Jim.

I mustered my phone, called Eric (Kaisen) and explained what I was looking for. We chatted and he was patient...two days later I figured out he was right the day before when we first talked. Mongo like horses.

The first conversation with the current owner and FJ guru was amazing: He went through the options for the truck, what he would do, what made sense for these trucks, etc. I wanted certain things (mostly the ability to cruise at 65 mph plus).

Two hours and a few felt tips.

We talked a lot about other stuff and I pulled the string on the deal.

Jeff, are you still looking for an SUV for a DD? What are you leaning towards? Also, I sent you an email.

Paul, when did you get the Toy?

Jim Richards 02-07-2013 11:21 AM

Never mind Paul. We posted at the same time.

I'm waiting on a Skype from NZ: I don't pick it up until June. Trying to make a father/son trip but Jack may be in Japan for language school.

Jim Richards 02-07-2013 11:31 AM

He's gonna be grinning. :)

Yep, got a 4 runner over the weekend. My land Cruiser was nailed by a woman on the cell phone sitting at a stop. That land Cruiser was given to my workman, David (you will meet. A very nice guy) a couple of weeks before the accident. I was on my way for a tune up and alignment before I hand him the car when i was hit. It was already in his name.

Got your email. I am sitting at a job site checking up on a few things. Sometimes I cruise PPOT when I am waiting for a sub contractor or inspector. I can't really focus with all this going on. The answer is yes to about 95% of your question and the changes are fine. I will return your mail in detail later when I get back home without all the noise and distraction.

Congrats on the purchase Jeff, and condolences on your LC. No hurries on my email, I was just concerned about its delivery due to the size of the attachment.

If I remember, the D90, the used Quigley 4x4 I owned for about a week and now the FJ?

All good, Cliff. I have a bit of a head start working through the rigs I wanted when kids and other stuff were more important.

To the OP: The 2003 4Runner Sport 4x4 I bought from Whippedpup may not be "cool", but it is so overbuilt that cool doesn't matter.

Congrats on the FJ Paul, and color me jealous. At the glacial rate that I am progressing on the Targa, it very well may be three years from now.

Cool is only in the eye of the beholder. I bought my LCs, (2nd 80 series) not because its cool, but for their durability and ability in the back country. I did a bit of that in my youth. It took a long time to kill off my first one and it was beaten already when I got it.

I like the 4 runner a lot. Plenty of lux-o-boat stuff that I do not care for. Good for taking the kids out to the backcountry and still keep my wife who has become a bit soft over they years when it comes to playing in the dirt. I have to say this, the 4runner is screwed together well. Feels very solid.

thanks, my old dirty LC saved my little 5 year old and my life, due to the height and the weight. She hit me head on coming side way. She smacked me with her right fender and her BMW went under my car. it lifted me onto the sidewalk. during the impact, My little boy and I both were both lifted off the seat. Fun actually:)

Any car that keeps you and your family safe is a good car.

onewhippedpuppy 02-07-2013 02:23 PM

When my wife was between cars she used my FJ80 as our family car for 3 months. That's noteworthy because at the time it was 20 years old and had almost 200k on it. I don't trust just any car to transport my family, but I never worried about my 80.
