Kiwi needs a home!

She showed up on my FB page and is running out of time. She's at Spartanburg South Carolina's Humane Society. Cat, Dog, Pet Adoption in Spartanburg, SC | Spartanburg Humane Society

Kiwi - A13806316

Kiwi is a 2 year old tricolor Australian cattle dog mix who was brought to the shelter as a stray. This sweet girl is hard to resist once you see her dancing with excitement to meet you! The Good Samaritan who brought Kiwi to the SHS tells us that she did very well with her children and loves attention. Kiwi loves to give kisses when she's not too busy snuggling, and will happily greet you with a wiggle of her cute, stubby little tail! She can sometimes be a bit picky about other dogs, and will need to meet any other dogs in the household before adoption to help ensure a happy and lasting new home. Australian cattle dogs, in general, are very smart and active dogs. They were originally bred to work driving livestock. Their energy level and drive can sometimes make them challenging as family pets. Without a “job” to do, they will often get into trouble finding “work” of their own. These dogs are often turned into animal shelters for being destructive, too active, or for herding (following and chasing) family members. Adopters should be prepared to give Kiwi a positive outlet for her energy and intelligence. Training classes are a must, and interactive sports like agility and Frisbee offer the mental and physical stimulation dogs like Kiwi need to thrive, all while helping you build a stronger bond with your new companion! Visit this delightful girl today to find out more about welcoming her into your heart and your home.

Here's a short video clip of her that will tug at your heart strings:
http://www.spartanburghumane.org/details/details.php?id=5557

If you can spread the word --- maybe we can find her a forever home!

Here are some details about her:
Spartanburg, SC: Kiwi #13806316

Approximately 2 years old, unaltered female, black and white Australian Cattle Dog mix. Surrendered to the shelter over the counter as a stray by someone who found her wandering in the Wellford area. No microchip found, unclaimed. Approaches readily in kennel, social. Finder reports that she got along well with her children and likes attention.

Medical Info:
Tested negative for heartworm disease, approximately 36.00 pounds. Some tartar on molars. Some hair loss/thinning hair noted on back/rear region- waiting for vet diagnosis.

Behavior Evaluation:
-No handling issues noted: Jumped up to lick assessor’s face, accepted petting with relaxed body posture during handling exercises.
-Nervous around loud noise/sudden movement: Followed assessor at end of leash, a bit fearful during “tag” exercise.
-No indications of food aggression or resource guarding noted.

Dog Aggression:
We tested Kiwi with a large, adult male dog. She was nervous at first, ears back, head down, and still. She seemed fine once the other dog lost interest, but then began barking at him towards the end of the exercise when she was leaving. Would likely benefit from slow introductions to other dogs.

======================

I am owned by 2 female Blue Heelers and they are unbelievable! I wish I could add Kiwi to our family but I'm not sure I can handle being owned by three dogs!

Thanks for any interest and for helping anyway you can!

WOOF!

The traits mentioned are typical ACD/Cattle dog.

If anyone wants a great pet thats as much as a companion dog this is a hell of a breed.

They're not lap dogs. Our ACD's name is Cole. He's the smartest dog that I've had in my life. I've grown up with pekenese, shelties, & 4 Siberian Huskies.

Cole is unlike all of the dogs that I've shared my life with.

ACDs will test you, but I would have another in a heartbeat.

I'm 5000 miles away, or I'd seriously consider taking her. She'd make a nice girlfriend for my red heeler, Cowboy.
This is a disturbingly smart breed. Once a pet has figured out how to open the refrigerator. A line has been crossed.

My mate has one that not only opens the fridge but gets him a beer and closes the fridge.

So true! My Heeler Toby creeps me out with how intelligent he is. Never had a dog like him. After having this breed, I dont think i could ever own anything else.

Thought I'd mention her here just to increase exposure.

There's so many deserving shelter dogs (and other animals) but this one in particular caught my eye as a special little girl....

Thanks for your help!

Video of my two girls. The one without her tail is a rescue from Louisiana in 2006 - best decision ever made was to get a companion for my first girl....(on the video below...once it begins - right click and select 'zoom' to full screen for best viewing):

AWESOME DUK - THANK YOU! Facebook is the perfect social network to get the word out the quickest!!!

You know folks...it's not uncommon to arrange for transport of these dogs across several states or in some cases across country.

So no matter where you live - please cross-post - you never know if someone is looking for a great girl like Kiwi!

Thanks again!

Good point Baz, we just transported a dobie from Columbia, SC to Asheville, NC on it's way to IL.

So even if you're thousands of miles away, it's possible.

BTW- Spartanburg/Greeneville area is really over run with strays and abandoned animals.

My blue is the smartest and easiest to train dog I have ever had! Getting the hearding instinct out is tough, she likes to guide me to the washroom in the middle of the night! (kinda comforting!) Somebody please save this dog!

Yes Mike - I know what you mean. This breed does not leave your side.

Terms I have heard are "Velcro dog" and "Your little shadow".

They are wired this way - to stay on guard and ready for assignment!

Incredibly alert and vigilant. Just look at how big those ears that stick up in the air... so they can hear what's happening!

Mine will stay at or near my wifes feet when ever she can. If Joanna cries Cole will pop up to her face to try to comfort her.

I was out of town for a week Cole stood on me for 20 minutes to try to stop me from moving.

I wish she was closer.
