Edumakare me on Kindle
Decided to get the wife a Kindle (we go thru a LOT of books)
I'm thinking of getting the keyboard version because I have had trouble with touch screen. What about the discount you get if you take the screen saver with ads? Is that super annoying? And why do some of the carrying cases have back lites? Isn't the Kindle have it's own back lite?

The e-ink Kindles (black and white LCD) do NOT have a backlight. They are great in bright light and look like a printed piece of paper. They also use very little electricity so their battery life is very long. The "con" is that they don't have their own backlight. The color Kindles that are basically specialized Android tablets do have a backlight. They go through their battery MUCH faster, and they can be hard to see in bright light (sunlight mostly).

I have an e-ink Kindle. As masraum notes, the battery life is terrific.
and the screen is indeed very like ink on paper. A couple of things I've noticed: Downloads are almost instantaneous. Type size can be adjusted from small to big and bigger. But doing that can make margins and breaks between words weird - at least on some e-books. The thing offers an e-mail account - I didn't know it did that. The classics - those works that are off copyright - are the biggest bargain on the planet. I've added the complete works of Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Robert Lewis Stephenson, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Joseph Conrad, Ralph Waldo Emerson and more and I haven't yet spent $25 on content. The thing is a little clunky to move around on - searching for something specific under an author's name, for instance. Finding your way around isn't intuitive. Still, this is a really cool idea and an incredibly convenient way to read. Just occured to me - I should add that the version I have is the largest, most expensive one - my sweet wife bought it for me as a gift. I do believe it's more feature-laden than the two smaller versions, so it may have stuff on it (see above) that the smaller ones do not.

We bought our daughter a Kindle for Christmas last year and she loves it. She has the non-backlit model and she has a leather carrying case with a light that she uses. She reads constantly and she really enjoys the Kindle and she has it with her almost constantly...

As side side note on "other" models of e-readers. Make sure you understand the limitations of the company. While in Mexico, Barnes and Noble refused to allow book downloads, I'm guessing based on IP address. They said it was illegal to supply books in a country where they did not have a copywrite agreement. I could not download book while on vacation.
Amazon does not seem to have this limitation with the Kindle and Kindle App.

My wife and I have looked at the e-ink kindles and Nooks and other brands. The only thing that I think would be an improvement would be if more companies would make 7" or 7.5" models. My wife likes to bump the text size up just a little, and with the margins shrunk as small as they can go and the text slightly enlarged the page feels a little small. It would be nice if the screens were just a bit bigger than they are (6" for amlost all of the e-ink offerings, I think Sony makes a 7" model).

There is also the Kindle DX, which has a comparatively huge 9.7" screen. It is a little heavy though.
I am probably going to get my wife a Kindle Fire for Christmas. |

I have the Literati 7" wireless reader. Like Kindle only powered by KOBO.
It has adjustable backlighting and print sizing. You can make the screen black with white lettering. It came with 150 books, lots of them are classics. It was a gift so it is the one I ended up with. The reviews are terrible on Amazon. Not user friendly but it works for me. It is not a web browzer. You can subscribe to your favorite daily newspapers and monthly magazines. I added 8 gb of memory. Bat life is so-so. The cost... $40.00. |

I have the kindle that has free 3g and regular wireless connectivity.
The ads only come on when you turn it off. Does not bother me in the least. I got the case with the built in light. It works great. http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Cover-Keyboard/dp/B003DZ165W/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1318353594&sr=1-1 Battery life lasts forever if you turn off the wireless. You only need it on to download books, which takes just seconds. Tons of free books out there. You can surf the internet, email and such, but it is kind of difficult to type and to see some things. But it works in a pinch, not really designed for that. Great reader though.

Yeah, the big on that is ipad sized is bigger than she wants. If the small ones were just a little bit bigger. But, they aren't, so she's likely to end up with a 6" Kindle this Christmas.

I didn't go with the Kindle for one reason: Can't download local library books on it.
Got the Color Nook, refurbished for $179. Did the "root" to make it an Android tablet. Put on the Kindle App as I have have over 1,400 books on my computer in Kindle format. Can also convert those files and read on the Nook. YMMV.
