Yep. I saw them a few years back and Mark Mothersbaugh looks older than my dad. So much for devolution.

sc_rufctr 10-10-2011 10:54 PM

I saw them live about 27 years ago. From memory they were great.

Fuche me. Were have the years gone?

Rednine11 10-11-2011 03:08 AM

I think they were ahead of their time back in the day, I liked their work and still listen to their music sometimes. I heard a rumor a while back that they might be getting back together.
Remember that crazy video for peek-a-boo !!

Saw them in Sydney ,Australia round about 1980. Loved the cover of The Stones 'Satisfaction', 'Girl U Want', 'Uncontrollable Urge' and of course 'Whip It'. They were able to generate a palpable energy both on stage and on vinyl! I'm not sure but in Australia in the 70's there was this kids show called 'Bill and Ben the Flower pot Men'-they were string puppets that wore exactly the same hats as they did on stage-

I met the Mothersbaugh's a few years ago at a NAMM show and they were both very friendly and gracious guys...

As a 13 year old, this was rock and roll. My older brothers were led zepplin, montrose and my older sister was rockin out to Bread. Devo was different, wild, fresh, unpredictable. I nearly wore the groves out on first albums, playing them over and over while building slot car tracks.

They were the first concert I went to. My mom gave me a couple of candy bars to take with me so that during the show I could have a snack. I went with a friend and his older brothers. Holy smokes on the way to the show they pulled out a pipe and started getting high. I had never seen pot before then and had no interest, however when the older dudes found out that I had the candy bars I gained instant status. The show was wild and was canceled half way thru by fire marshalls due to overcrowding. A small riot ensued following the bringing up of the lights. It was a fantastic nite of youthful exhuberance.

I still have alot of thier songs on my Ipod and they never get skipped.

Jim Richards 10-11-2011 05:43 AM

I like 'em.

M.D. Holloway 10-11-2011 05:45 AM

They put electromusic into the mix. As influencial as The Police and the Ramones were on the new wave movement in the early 80's. Adam and the Ants (Later Adam Ant), Men at Work and the B-52s followed suit. All had more than a trick pony. All had fun albums and none seem to take themselves too seriously.

MRM 10-11-2011 06:07 AM

They're still very active and everyone on the board still hears them almost every day, whether you realize it or not. They're one of the most popular writers and performers of high-end advertising music today.

How they got into advertising songwriting is intetresting. They decided several years ago that the modern model of artists getting paid for copies of their songs had become obsolete. They noted that until modern times, musicians made their money either by live performance (pay per view) or they gained a rich sponsor who commissioned them to write and perform for them. They realized that the modern equivelent is to take on corporate gigs. If you have enough money, you can commission DEVO to write and perform a song for you, your kid's birthday, or your brand's new product. The quality of the song will be the same as any of their regular compositions they did on spec, as it were. They're making more money than ever. Some of their commercials could be hit songs if released the regular way. I think they're brilliant.

red-beard 10-11-2011 06:55 AM

Do you have any examples of thier corporate work?

Flower pots?! Those are energy domes

I saw an interview recently that they were getting some flak due to changing the color from red to blue.

Is anyone seeing the irony how De-evolutionized men are doing music for corporate advertising?

trekkor 10-11-2011 10:00 AM

This is our next LeMons race theme.

I'm already starting our costumes.
I need some more ideas for the car.

thanks,

KT

Been to see them live three times -- way in the past. Once on the "Fridays" TV show, once at Universal and once (a revival) at the Raymond in Pasadena.

Mark Mothersbaugh does a lot of scoring (music you pervs). and some painting. Some of his soundtracks: Mark Mothersbaugh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Years ago, I ran into Jerry Casale in Santa Monica and asked "are you not men?" He said "not anymore."

I am a proud owner of the Devo Easy Listening cassette...

trekkor 10-11-2011 12:02 PM

I just ordered the 'best of DEVO' cassette on Amazon to play through external speakers during our race...

Can you install external speakers? Cut holes in the Fenders and surface mount them. Devo - Quadraphonic.

They should have Power Dome shaped housings...

Bill Douglas 10-11-2011 01:29 PM

Yup, if I looked hard enough I could find a Devo album in the stack of records in the attic. Maybe somewhere near the vinyl tshirt and plastic hat.

Gates of Steel. You ought to be able to do something with that.

Uncontrollable Urge is probably a bad omen for a race car.

I've liked devo since the came out of Akron Ohio in the 70's when i was in high school. They fit into the alternative music that i like so much more then mainstream classic rock that i still dislike. To me, devo kraftwerk, and elvis costello is my classic rock. I just saw them last summer when they came to Pittsburgh. Took my 19 yo daughter who now likes them. Devo is an acquired taste so I'm not going to turn you on to them if you don't like them now. They have influenced many artist today and they are often quoted as being influences along with the pixies, sonic youth, and others. As far as how the sound now....great! Face it, they never had the most challenging vocals or instrumentals so it's not hard to think they can't do it now that they are all well into their sixties. Devo has a good catalog of tunes beyond whip it. What I noticed most about the concert was how unbelievable LOUD it was. They also have great energy and you can tell they aren't faking it for the money like other 80's bands on tours now. Their funny, witty and are having fun. Their lineup is mostly the same also with some minor changes. My favorite song "freedom of choice".

techweenie 10-11-2011 05:53 PM

Glad to see other Devoids here.

I think a lot of people who like them also would like the even quirkier They Might Be Giants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAbZzdalZh4

I was a little skate punk growing up in Souther California in the late seventies. We had heard that DEVO was going to play a free concert at one of our local skateparks, a place called Pomona Pipe and Pool.

They were probably one of my favorite bands at the time along with the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.

Rodney Bingenheimer, a local DJ and promoter hosted and DEVO did show up but no one told them they were expected to play and they didn't. They posed for some pictures and got out of there as a near riot ensued, complete with lots of thrown beer bottles. This was probably '78 or '79.

If you want to see the early days when they were The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, get your hands on Forbidden Zone. Forbidden Zone (1982) The hot sister in law is in it.
