Young adult rant

Hippies.

I hate hippies. And I am not talking about you middle aged weekend hippies that have respectable weekday jobs (Superman.) I am talking about my GD generation that likes to not work and expect free hand outs.

PUHLEEEZE.

I have had a steady job for 3 years now and I think it has already turned me into Sammy. I see these damn kids wearing peace sign shirts and about want to throw up. Want money for your iPhone? Shelter in your bach pad? New rubber for your Audi? GO WORK FOR IT.

I can afford the few luxuries I have not because I am given handouts, but because I work my A$$ off to get noticed.

Jimeny crickets some people my age royally piss me off.

/Rant.

I get it.

I had the same epiphany at a Phish concert in 2000. (I was a hippie myself in college, though never had any thoughts but supporting myself). I suddenly realized that when their parents were done supporting these people, I would be.

Substitute 'ravers' for hippies, and I had the same experience.

Good for you for think the way you do. I was like you back when I was 19-20. Tom, please don't forget to stop and smell the roses. I didn't until I was in my late twenty with a few bucks in my pocket where I can travel the world. I did miss my mid twenties a little now come and think of it. You don't get it back. You will be fine, you know what you are doing.

For the record, I was a hippie before I had to support myself. Since the age of 21 I hve done so - sometime better, sometimes worse. But I (read my wife )have managed to raised three fine children and to put them through private (inexpensive) parochial schools, and as you can probably tell, I am very proud of where i ended up.

Not bad for a former hippie...

I'm glad I had the experiences I did. Going to rave parties was crazy fun. Amazing experiences.

Mind boggling when you are 17. Fun when you are 22. But soon after that, you start to look around at the people your hanging around with, people that aren't really going anywhere, and you don't like what you see. My experience anyway...

There's a Hugo930 in every crowd, and PARF is no different.

Deeply unhappy, ill mannered, constantly belligerent and abusive and dumber than a hammer, this guy gets his kicks by trying to piss people off while playing with his tiny little pencil dick.

We all know his type from grade school.

Best just to ignore him. PARF is a broad church.

Nothing like looking at the taxes taken from your pay to give you conservative thoughts, is there?

Three years isn't a lot of experience. Hating "hippies" is easy. They wear funny clothes and are easy to target. Someday you'll learn to recognize the freeloaders who walk around in suits and ties. They're slicker and more subtle, but they'll cost you more.

Yup.

I agree with you Tom, and I don't think of them as hippies. Now Todd....he's got a good idea.

One final thing, Tom. It has often occurred to me that these lazy, freeloading, prima-donna entitlement kids will need things. Tires, plumbing, electrical, computer stuff, transportation, security, blah blah. And the 20% of your generation that is out there busy doing stuff will be ready and waiting for calls from the people who don't do anything. You think plumbers are expensive now, just wait. Kids these days....no kidding....they don't want to be $100-per-hour plumbers. No schit. They refuse. According to my plumber/pipefitter friends. Some of whom are hippies, BTW.

Yea guys I know what ya mean about not letting life pass me up. I agree that I am at a pretty sweet age and need to take full advantage of it.

And trust me. I take advantage.

Now the thing that bothers me are those kids my age that just expect everything to be given to them. And ya know what? I used to be one of those kids. I guess that's how you can define yourself.

I wasn't bashing any of you guys on the board.

That is pretty much how I managed the mid '70's to early 80's, with other genres of the female species tossed in. Variety is a good thing when you're young and on the rise.

But none of the hippie-types I worked with were free loaders, quite the opposite. All the manual labor jobs I worked in college were manned by hippies, all busting butt.

While social services in California at that time would cushion a hard fall, I don't recall anyone my age in those days that would have be able to made a go on the state's dime.
