The per4fect Dog for those living in coyote country

Evren's mom has 3 of them...I'd almost feel sorry for anyone trying to attack her. He wrote once of "dog sitting" for his mom, was worried about the safety of his German Shepherds. All went well, with her "gentle giant" being nice to the weaker dogs.

My choice...........

This is Hary Janos. He is about 18 months old and weighs in at 150+ lbs. He is a Great Pyrenees. While gentle around kids and women, strange men get a completely different reaction from him. The ruff around his neck stands up like that on a lion and he goes from being 'fluffy" to "buff" in about 2 seconds. A picture.

My mother had a Anatolian-Great Pyrenees mix. He was a pretty neat dog, would go on patrols around the edge of her property a few times a day, and would park himself next to the front gate to keep an eye on things:

He was also an escape artist, and would go on walkabouts from time to time, once visiting a neighbor (after a swim in the pond, of course) walked in the open door, and ended up climbing in bed with a bedridden old man.

One of her friends summed it up perfectly, "He is a force to be reckoned with...."

Our neighbor used to have a pair of them. They would roam the entire section. Didn't have much of a coyote problem back then either.

These dogs are so cool! They put them in the flock as puppies and they grown up thinking they are sheep. Next week we'll be at Infineon and they have them in the flock that keeps the grass mowed down. .they will attack anything that comes near the flock..

Neighbors up the street had a huge Anatolian. It would get out by jumping over a fence that was about 6 feet high and roam the neighborhood. Friendly as could be, and he would wander over to say 'hi!' when he was out. A bit disturbing to see a dog as big as a pony wandering up, even if his tail was wagging.

Those are gorgeous dogs, and their looks are very effective against humans. They look very mean. But......

A coyote would make quick work of any of them. A raccoon would too. There is a HUGE difference between a domesticated animal, no matter how buff, and a wild animal.

Not true. When I was young, back in Michigan, we would hunt Raccoons with Walkers(English Fox hounds). Some of those big bores could go 15-20 pounds. One on one with a dog, a coon could fight like hell, but eventually the coon would slip up, and the dog would have him by the neck....all over.

These were hunting dogs, breed for that purpose....but they're still domesticated.

Not intended to be. If it is, I apologize.

Where my warehouse is there's coyotes at night. I make sure that Cole is in the truck before sundown.

"According to Turkish shepherds, three Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are capable of overcoming a pack of wolves and injuring one or two of them. These dogs like to roam, as they were bred to travel with their herd and to leave the herd to go hunt for predators before the predators could attack the flock."

Evidently, the trick is to convice Anatolians that family & other pets are the flock?
Leaving the herd to hunt down predators explains their wanderlust, I suppose.
