another reason why I like my Bullitt Mustang
Last week, I had the 7,500 mile service performed. I'm a Mobil 1 fan, so I suppled the 6 qts. of 5-20. Just an oil/filter change, tires rotated and an inspection check list. Tab, not counting the oil, was $19.95. I made the appointment at 11:00 A.M., arrived at the dealership 15 miles from home for the 2:00 appointment, enjoyed a couple of cups of coffee, watched a baseball game on the high def. TV in the waiting room. Also eyeballed the $60K Raptor in the showroom. Well, maybe if I win a lottery. Back home by 4:00 in time to watch the end of the game.
Contrast this with my old Porsche. To be fair, I'd do these services myself. But they would take me more than 2 hours to do. Oil alone takes longer, with it's oil tank and a sump to drain. (dry sump system, 8.5 quarts of mobil 1 15-50) Jackstands & floor jack for the lift. Since the oil tank was ahead of the right rear wheel in a '72, I'd remove all four before beginning the oil change. might as well, since I was going to rotate anyway. Figure 4-5 hours to do it all, including washing the wheels tires. Now for more serious work on the P-car? That would mean a 2 hour slog up I-5 to a Portland area specialty shop, enduring the krazy traffic up there. Nobody near me knows how to work on a '72S. The mechanical injection alone would be a mystery to most mechanics. IF the work meant leaving the car overnight, it would mean Cindy following me up in her car, the entire slog reversed to pick the car up. A royal pain in the ass! Believe me...a Porsche Mechanic won't shake your hand for $19.95! Yep, life is simpler now...at my age, I like simple! Yeah, while behind the wheel, the old 911S was a gas...but the other hassles? Well, guess it's all part of getting older...comfort over style, that sort of thing. Flame away... Why'd I do this? Got weary of reading about "police brutality"..would rather have you direct your hate towards me. ;) |
I think it is age related. If I was going to buy a current pony car, I'd get a Mustang too.
Realize that one reason it is cheap & easy to work on is that is just a cosmetics package, exhaust & strut brace on a standard GT Premium Mustang. Now, what are your plans for the fake gas cap on it? How about using that as the antenna for the mobile WiFi hot spot? Then you could read all the "hate" posts while driving. |
I see your point, Paul. Living the legend is sometimes a real pain in the behind as well as the wallet.

not much more
yup on the other comment and don't forget the old VW Camper either - of course, it is an '86, so I guess it is "new" |

Just for Randy...;) And that's only the visuals. More horsepower than the GT, cold air intake, and more. But then, it wouldn't be comparable to any early 911...especially a much coveted one like yours.

Very valid comparison...if you live in a rubber room.

Very true...you gotta have one foot in a rubber room to drive a 2.4 911S these days, in today's traffic. |
There is no car from that era that I want to drive as a daily driver.

#10, you figure it out... |
You sold your '72?!
|
wow!!! dark gray PAINTED calipers!!!
|
Nothing wrong with simple, Paul. I like tinkering with my 911 but there may come a day when I can't or just don't want to anymore. I may sell it, I may not.
My 911 is not nice as yours was/is so caring for it is much less intense. I keep our 3 vehicles as clean as possible at all times so that keeps me busy enough. |
That is just a fat ugly pig. I don't care how fast it goes, it is just a fat ugly pig.
BTW, cheap oil changes, great reason to own a, ahem, sports car. |

Ummm, an oil change and tire rotation in my 911 might take 20 minutes.. tops...
|
A friend of mine bought one the second year they were out. He only had it for about six months then had to sell it to help pay for medical expenses he'd accrued during the time he owned it.
It was incredible. Women flocked to him like he was Steve McQueen! The problem was that the women kept beating the crap out of him and putting him in the hospital because he wasn't Steve McQueen! |
Wow!!! They lowered it by 6mm!!
Seriously, it probably squats more than that when a person gets in.... |
2 hours to change oil on a 911?
I've once dropped AND reinstalled my 911's engine in less time then that. don't blame the slow oil change on the car when it was a slow mechanic. |
