The Free Pile

Free Pile.

I see 'em in all kinds of neighborhoods. People don't want to bother with a yard sale, so they put a bunch of crap on the curb with a "free" sign. Clothes, furniture, small appliances.

Amazingly most piles are gone within a couple of days.

Sign of the times? Have I just not noticed before? Residual effect of the craigslist "free" listing?

I do it regularly. You can't imagine the garbage that other people grab. It has saved me at least two trailers loads to the dump!

I put all sorts of junk out in front of my office building. It is amazing what someone will take.

I set stuff out by my mailbox. Works every time.

Recently, someone set out some old wooden drawers by their mailbox, my wife noticed them and had me pick them up. My kids turned them into an art project then filled them with their misc. stuff.

In a couple of years I will put them back out for the next generation.

Put it curbside, quick add on Craigslist - it's all gone in a couple of hours (then take th ad down). One man's junk is another's treasure also fits very nicely into the recycling movement.

If it's not gone in a few hours, I take the add down and dispose by other means (e.g. dump).

I live in a pretty nice neighborhood and have seen neighbors with free stuff on the curb. Old sofa, washing machines, etc. Gone quick.

I regularly see folks, usually Hispanic, driving through the neighborhood on Sunday afternoons/evenings with a truck towing a trailer. Usually both are completely full of bikes, weedeaters, lawn mowers, washing machines, refrigerators, etc....

I've seen lots of folks pick up all sorts of things. I usually just put the stuff out for the trash a bit early and it disappears.

I don't put stuff out by the house, kinda like feeding strays. But, while checking my office mail last week, the glass company had this laing out and I figured it would be nice in my shop, since it is getting close to being finished....

Probably not where you guys live. But out here in SoCal, the hispanics take that stuff down to Mexico and use it for building houses.

Pay attention to the stuff you don't want to disappear. Long time neighbors lost a nice piece of antique furniture while taking a break from sanding.

They had a pile at the curb already, and I suppose the cleaning crew thought it'd be helpful to haul off the one piece just outside the garage.

They make rounds in the hood I grew up in, and it's nothing new.

Twice a year the city has a "free stuff" weekend. Put it out Friday at the front curb, take it in Sunday night if it's not gone. Great way to empty the garage.

Sunday evening the "pickers
make their rounds in our city.

We don't typically put good things but last weekend I put out an old metal yard spreader. I never used it so I won't miss it.

It was gone in about an hour.

We donate anything that is good, mostly the kid's toys and things that they don't need/use any longer.

The evening before the trash pickup in our neighborhood is when the pickers start driving thru looking for goodies. It's not generally acceptable to put crap out more than a day before trash pickup though. I found a great stool for the garage one evening while taking my bike ride. There were 5 stools on the curb with their trash cans and I took the best one. As I was riding away someone stopped and took the rest. It has become a habit of ours to keep an eye on the curbsides for who knows what. Great way to recycle (get rid of) unwanted stuff.

A few years ago I was cutting grass in my front yard. The mower ran out of gas and I just left it there. It was near the sidewalk, but on the house side, not the street side. When I came back with the gas can a couple of guys were loading into the trunk of a car.
