On another note. I had a customer pay me today with a PERFECT Stevens 311 in .410. No wood but I think I can handle that. All the metal parts are there including all the screws, all mint. It will be my winter "Me" project.

So...I finished re-inletting the action for fit, then used acra glass again (black) to set the locks for even recoil pressure.. Set it aside until saturday to take it apart after sanding.

All the screws have been boogered beyond repair so I'm ordering a new set of screws today. A nice finishing touch. Of course they will all be timed so the slots point down the gun. A serious finishing touch.

Barrels after 6 cycles are looking real good. Just out of the boiling tank..

Looking like a gun again and a lot like my towel rack...that one is my Crescent 16ga. that I started a thread on removing oil soaking from the wood. It's almost ready for reassembly. The second gun, the one without furniture, is another .410 bore that a customer paid me with for some work. It's a Stevens 311.

More next week....

Where are you getting the new screws?

targa911S 11-03-2011 06:06 PM

Numrich. Although I went there to order them and they are out of all but one screw, so I will have to do the best I can with what I have or find a donor in my parts bin. Numrich buys guns and takes them all a part and sells each part individually.

By the way Neil, I will be shipping you that wood for your rifle project next week. I'll give you a heads up when it leaves here. What is the word on that Fox?

Mericet 11-03-2011 06:20 PM

I thought it might be Numrich. I was just wondering if you had another source.

Looking forward to seeing that piece of wood! As for the Fox, it will be shipped to the college around Thanksgiving (owner is on a project away from home and wants to make sure all the parts get shipped). We have agreed on a price though :D. He agreed on the price you suggested.

Fantastic work, David! Out of curiosity, what is that black looking grease that is on the stock tabs where the side plates go?

And wow, the barrels look excellent!! That shot of them wet makes that metal look like a mirror!

Beautiful!

JA

Hey John. The black stuff is a 2 part fiberglass resin that I use for repairs and for bedding areas of high impact. Once it hardens I will sand it flush with the side plates so the pressure of the recoil is equally distributed. When done it will look like a fine black line around the plates. You will hardly see it. Yeah the barrels are gonna look great, but they will not be wet glossy black. The process used gives more of a satin type of finish naturally. Like picture #3 above. If you want them glossy you would have to coat them with some kind of clear finish, but we won't do that. The original finish is what my process duplicates. The whole gun is shaping up nicely. I believe it will be a good looking, functional (1 barrel) gun. I'm almost to final sanding, stain, and finish. You should have it back around the first of Dec.

Neil, I'm glad you got it at that price! A good deal!

This is the piece of wood you are getting. I wet the wood in the last two shots so you could see the figuring. I hope you like it.

David, I think that wood is going to make a absolutely gorgeous stock! Thanks again.
