.410 update....

A little sanding with the mouse and a wash with acetone does wonders for the old pad which is remarkably soft for it's age.

So we left it clamped together for 24 hrs and said a prayer that it would come apart....

It came apart nicely..

A little filing to get all the clearances right, and reassembly to check for function. It goes click when it should. Yeah!

All together, all the pieces. Now we start the fun stuff.

For the next few days I will concentrate on rusting, boiling and carding the barrels. Not much to show ya there. I'm on 3 iterations now and they are starting to blacken nicely.
More to come......

Joeaksa 10-26-2011 10:10 AM

Very nice work!

azasadny 10-26-2011 10:11 AM

Wow!!!

Thanks guys. We are getting closer to final sanding and stain. John has asked for a satin finish, so that is what we will do. We will do it the old way of course, no "satin finish urethane" going on Grandpas gun. We will gloss finish it with oil, then knock off the gloss with 0000 wool. But we are getting ahead of ourselves........onward. Lunch break is over, I'm back to work.

Targa, are you going to clean up the interior inletting? I usually time my clean up so that the Accraglass is not quite so set up. About 10-12 hours at 70 degrees. That way I can cleanly cut and shape with my inletting chisels.

RPK that is exactly what I am doing today. Cleaning it all up, refinishing all the screws, cleaning out the action, and refitting the side locks. Pics tomorrow.

This is interesting work, I enjoy watching the process, Dave.

Amazing...

I surely thought the pad was toast. I would have never thought of SANDING it, and would have assumed that any chemical would have eaten it. All that said, I did wonder what you were going to do with it, and it sure looks great! I am really glad that we are able to keep it, as it is a key piece of the memories that I have of staring at that gun when I was a little kid while it leaned in the corner of the closet. Strange that a .410 would have a recoil pad on it in the first place, though, isn't it?

The wood on that stock looks fantastic. I can't wait to see it after the "fun stuff" starts, but I sure like the raw look of it just like it is!!

Looking great, David....thanks for the updates with pics!!

John, the recoil pad was more than likely added for the stock length, not the recoil cushion.
