locate old wood lumber?

OK, I am stumped, but haven't really call any of my suppliers. Local cabinet makers, wood working pros and carpenters, where can I find old thick lumber. I just talked with a designer about a weathered old gate for an old Spanish home with big fake strap hinges . I need to weld the bones out of steel, but I need to make the wood portion out of large weathered timber. Anyone know where can I locate them around Socal. The gate will be 6-7" thick sandwich to a 1 1/4" steel tube frame. I am looking for 3x10 or 12 materials. Remember, it has to be weathered. As a last resort, I am thinking of bringing in a flux finisher.

Jeff

I was hoping no flux finisher. These bastards never call with just run of the mill stuff. They are always some complex BS.

Dave,

Have you done stuff like that? I google it this afternoon, lots of them are reclaim lumber with holes and what not through them. I am looking at a piece that has been sitting out in the desert or by the sea for 10 years. That's the look she's looking for yet, it still has to be solid and strong. Reclaim lumber is not going to do the trick. I have already tried. Thanks for the tip.

Had I known about this earlier in the summer, it would not have been a problem. Even with a new piece of wood. Buy wood, take to desert, toss in out of the way location, come back in a week, flip boards over, come back following week and collect..

The grey wood on the Douglas Fir page is similar to desert aged wood.

No, I have no experience in aging wood, but I bet it's not that hard. If guys can relic a new Les Paul to look old and make it look authentic and sometimes fool experts, it can't be hard to weather a piece of wood.

In fact, I know I could.

There's an abandoned "city" out around Bakersfield... Lots of weathered boards out there... Midnight stealth mission...

I am in Oregon so no telling if we have a shared experience or not. I am looking for similar for a project. Search "lumber" on Craigslist and there are lots of hits for this. I think all the greenies / hippies / etc. have started deconstructing old buildings and selling the lumber. There are some actual firms that do this as well.

Good luck.

5 to 7 inches thick? What the hell is it, a draw bridge? I wanna see the frame and hinges.

BTW, if you need a welder...

Milt,

The overall thickness will be that thick. The actual wood gates will be mounted to the metal frame on the both sides. When you look at it from both the inside and out, it should look like an old fashion wooden gate. Each of the gate is 5'6" in width. The first thing that cross my mind were the hinges when the lumber gets wet during the winter. Now, I have to get the job then worry about those minor details.
