Vilhelm Moburg had that scene is the second book of his Emigrants series in about 1960 or so. In that book he killed his ox - the most valuable thing he owned - knowing his family would starve if he didn't survive and they all might starve if he killed the ox and huddled inside it kept him from freezing to death.
I guess the modern equivalent would be to burn all your cash and stock certificates in order to keep warm and survive a freezing night so you can go home and tell your family you're now broke.
