Porsche's secret new baby Boxster

Porsche's secret new baby Boxster

Porsche is preparing to piggyback VW and Audi’s roadster project and build a baby Boxster, a car that could be a true successor to the 356. But this new model won’t tread on the toes of any existing Porsches and production numbers will be capped to make this a highly desirable car. Our artist's impression reveals how the new Porsche could look................................. Why is Audi switching away from front- and all-wheel drive? Because Ingolstadt wants to answer back to critics and make the TT a dynamic success. It will also give Audi a relevant baby brother to the R8. Click here for our full story on the proposed Audi R3.

EDIT:.............related A3 sister car.
Audi scoop special: Audi R3 - the full story

Audi is readying this stunning new R3 sports car, a mid-engined little brother to the R8 supercar. Developed in conjunction with parent firm Volkswagen, the Audi R3 could arrive in five years' time, with four-cylinder power to take on the Mazda MX-5 but not enough grunt to tread on the toes of Porsche’s Boxster (now an inhouse family rival, don't forget). The Audi R3 is a replacement for the stillborn R4.

The Porsche looks like a Smart Roadster and the Audi looks like a Pontiac Solstice.

The Porsche looks like a Honda Del Sol in that picture.

If Porsche does offer a "Baby Boxster" I hope it is in the spirit of the Lotus Elise.

First there was Bernd Pischetsrieder, the former BMW chairman who wanted a budget roadster along the lines of the Mk1 Lotus Elise. There was even talk of Lotus building the car for VW, but in the end no decision was made.
I would not get too hung up on the Artist Concepts shown.

How so? It's a modern 914.

As a successor to either the 356 or 914, something like this done properly and priced realistically is a sure winner.

The Porsche model range seems to be multiplying like rabbits lately. Probably important on a financial level, but some people would argue its diluting the original sports car philosophy concept. Cool, however, if this should turn out like a smaller Cayman/Boxster RS.

Half of us can't (or shouldn't) afford a new Porsche, anyway. What the heck does PAG care about what we think?

If built in limited numbers (exclusivity) as the article mentions, then who cares? Most of us here won't be owning one. I'd love to own a modern 914 - simple and light - but it doesn't sound like Porsche wants to build one.

I just noticed the key button to access the other two pages of the article.

Quote:
Remember the proposed mid-engined Audi R4, the small brother of the R8? The R4 went nowhere because Porsche wanted to protect Boxster and Cayman. Audi and VW have since learned their lesson. The new sports car concept thus aims at a wide but relatively conservative Ł20-35k price range.
If they want a new 356, someone is already making those in France.

Things are about to get interesting or tough (depending on your point of view) for European car makers. Not only do they have something of a global recession to deal with but by 2012 the average C02 output for a car built by a European car maker must be no more than 130 Grams per KM. So somehow they have to make desirable small cars and sell them in big numbers to get away with the occasional monster like the GT2.

Buying into VW works very well for Porsche (VW can make the sensible stuff and balance things out) but even so Porsche will need to make a more frugal car at the bottom end of the scale and sell it, which is were this model should fit in.

Part of me hopes they don't make too good a job of building an Elise rival. I don't want to see Lotus going under!

Can I update a 2008 thread on 11/04/11?

Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen officially confirm the mid-engined roadster

Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen officially confirm the mid-engined roadster | Nordschleife Autoblahg

Quote:
After a long few months of back and forth rumors and prototypes, the leadership of the Volkswagen group have finally given the go-ahead to the final production of the three mid-engined roadster. All three are said to be available in 2013-2014. They will all use the same (MQB "Modular Querbaukasten") platform mid-engine and rear wheel drive, but will each use different styling for obvious reasons.
Looks like I can.

Please note that these are artist renderings, and look to be from several different sources.

When the Boxster came out in '96 it was really novel. I only wish Porsche could do that again. But in another direction than the Panamera. Now if the Panamera had been a pick up truck, that would have been novel.

Just stupid.

OK, I wish Porsche could do something novel but not stupid.

Probably not gonna happen anytime soon.

I'm guessing you can't get one of those here in the states?

And at 33K Euros... kinda steep...

I do like it.

If they build the Audi in that rendering, I will most likely make a very foolish decision when it is available. That is a beautiful concept.
