If you're talking possessions and discounting home/furnishings and cars, there ain't much. A girlfriend gave me a Rolex Sub no-date a few years back, and after that you're down to my iPad 64GB 3G, and from there it's my $300 Asus laptop.
Sentimental: I've got a rather 50s green and brown vase that was kept in my room as a kid and it's followed me everywhere. It is literally the only thing I took when I left home. I had to steal it because I'm damned if they wouldn't give it to me when I asked, despite no one caring about it but me (and had to explain what I was talking about). No one's ever noticed it missing from the family house or that it's in mine. But if I were to ever mention taking it, there'd be a $hitstorm. |

Values sure drop off after real estate, vehicles, and retirement accounts. Probably either my LeRoy Neiman Serigraph or my dads Hamilton "Tuxedo" watch.
|
epbrown. I want to see a picture of that vase!
Health, family, attitude, career, friends. I have these and they don't count. What do I value? Most stuff I own isn't worth much. A crack-head might steal it but I dont' think there is anything of value to speak of. What would I carry out of the house when it burns? My pre-war Epiphone archtop. I have had it since Sophomore year of HS. Not worth much but it is pretty important to me. Larry |

Like most others, not much after the house and cars. I do enjoy life, my wife, family and friends.
When I read the thread title and author, I was immediately curious as to what Motions' answer is to his own question. |
The knowledge that we create our own realities. We can believe the world is against us or alternatively believe that we can control our lives and the ultimate outcomes. In the same way we can believe that everyone in inherently evil or that everyone has at least some intrinsic good. It's all the way we look at life and each other.
|
Lots of stuff. Health, family, friends. I have my dad's medals and Navy uniform, and the flag that covered his casket. I have his rosary, and that is probably my most valuable possession. Old photographs. Senior prom pictures. Kids' art projects from when they were little.
Memories. My most valuable possessions are my memories. They're safe. Nobody can steal them. |
Me too,,,

Same here, although I don't "own" these things. What do we really "own" after all??? |

my older brothers art
one of his etching recently sold for $1700 Swann Auction Galleries : Full Details for Lot 464 |
I understood the question to mean objects only. I thought that was pretty clear. We all know that your wife/health/children/etc. are more valuable than objects.
I have a few things with enormous sentimental value. My most cherished possession is a small carved statue that my grandfather gave me in 1964, the year he died. I still have it on a bookshelf not two feet from my head while I'm sleeping. If there was a fire, I'd definitely grab it. Other than that, a ton of African art from various countries my brother has lived in and a limited edition commemorative gun that was my uncle's. :) |
My most valuable thing I own are my tools.
They allow me to improve my house, keep my cars running, provide a source of enjoyment through a hobby, and are extremely practical. Tools are one of the only "things" in my life that I intend to carry with me from place to place as I move around. I also feel like my wedding ring is valuable, but that is an emotional attachment to my wife which is quite different in my mind. |
My basses. They help keep me (reasonably) sane.

I don't have squat that I consider valuable. :)

OK, I know most of you guys are really smart so we have to play by the rules here.
ONE THING! And it can't be a non-tangible item. 90% of you have missed the boat on the original intent. |

By those rules (excluding bullion) it would have to be wine. I have around $7K invested in around 200 bottles.

Not sure, but off the top of my head I would say my wife's Tiffanys necklace that I got her for our 10th anniversary. That set me back a bit.....
|
My collection of military grade weapons.
|
We own our house outright but that is a shared asset with the wife that I don't own but she is my most valuable asset.
Other than that, the one item or thing would have to be my 911. It is a nice toy that is worth what I paid for it 16 years ago. |
Great answer!

My consciousness.
It is tangible and tractable in the way that I act, interact with people and my surroundings. |
My professional licenses both in aviation and architecture, I suppose my degrees too, but definitely those licenses. If everything else I have evaporated tomorrow, those would still allow me to have fantastic earning potential and to do the things I love to do.
They're worth literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in both investment and returns (realized and potential). |
Self-respect.

One thing I outright own? That's hard to answer but for right now, I would say my snowboard. I would say my running shoes but I could technically run without shoes. My snowboard keeps me active (healthy), connects me with nature and calms my brain (peace), connects me with other people that make me laugh and happy (love), challenges me (makes me think), and makes me feel good when I get to teach somebody else or introduce somebody else to the sport (growth, paying it forward, purpose). If I owned a surfboard, it would be that. I think the ocean brings me even more peace and links me nature even more... Is that what your question meant? Please do answer, motion. Not to necessarily know how you wanted us to answer but to sincerely know what you would say...

Possessions and money have no real value.
The most valuable thing I own is my time. I can't make any more of it and I spend a little more every day. |
*drunkenly grabs crotch*
The jewels. |
I also have a mint condition carmel-colored cashmere overcoat that my Dad bought new in 1957. It's really warm. I'm sure that it was stupid expensive but they told him that it would last.

But.....Motion reminded us of the rules. Tangible. Okay...... my father's rosary. If the house were burning and I had to walk out of here with one thing, that is the thing. |
