Porsche Expanding 911 Lineup with Safari Off-Roader

New concept coming to Beijing in April. Porsche feels there's room to expand the 911 lineup beyond the Carrera, Turbo and GT models, with an off-road “crossover” concept set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show this April. Dubbed the 911 Safari, according to German publication Motor Revue the concept will be based on the Carrera 4 and come with larger tires, skid plates, a suspension tuned for off-roading and higher ground clearance.

A positive response to the concept would see a production model hitting showrooms in 2016, coinciding with the 911's mid-cycle refresh. A 911 off-roader may seem like an April Fool's gag, but the Stuttgart-based carmaker does have previous experience. A 911 SC Safari ran the East African Safari Rally in 1978, and Porsche also participated in the 1983 and 1985 Paris-Dakar Rally first with a 911 Carrera 4x4 coupe and then with the 911-based 959 Paris-Dakar. Markets such as China, Russia and the Middle East, places not renowned for having quality roads, is where Porsche will likely target the off-roader. That said, we can't imagine the 911 Safari will look out of place in LA, Miami, London or Monaco either. - See more at: Porsche Expanding 911 Lineup with Safari Off-Roader

So they want Subi's market and money. They need to make sure the words Green and Safe are in their ad.

Bunnys? You means snow bunnies? I've always enjoy seeing them in tights skiing, and ... Sorry man, wrong market segment. That's should be in their turbo ad.

I wonder if the are going to beef up the body like many cross overs, like the X6, or if it's just going to be a higher 911.

It would be awesome to see them compete in rally again. But I really can't envision an off road 911 in showrooms.
