NTSB cell recommendation

Seems a little drastic to me. Let's try and keep this out of PARF.

100+

I was behind a driver that was weaving all over the road. You could see his head was looking at his cell phone and not the road. I was wanting him to drive off the road into a BIG tree.

It should be treated exactly the same as DUI....as a matter of state law. But I don't know why NTSB should have the power to do this. It's every gov't. agency's natural state to look for any way to increase its budget and power and it should be stopped at every opportunity.

I agree the NTSB need to stay out of it except for commercial transportation between states.

Good point...while I hate those who text behind the wheel, this is state territory, NOT the federal governments role...

It could be done in software. Disable keyboard while the phone is in motion. And considering what I see around here, it would be a good idea. Last week I saw someone texting/emailing while driving through a traffic circle.... almost took out a few of us, but never put down their phone....

In Washington State we already have a law against inattentive driving (which I believe can be interpreted to include texting, etc), so this would be completely unncesessary.

unfortunately not as simple as that. phones do not always have GPS turned on. you don't have "speed" data. internal accelerometer is for angle or bump detection.

even if u were to have speed data, somehow u have to identify the driver of the vehicle and not a passenger. otherwise all busses, trains, taxis would be mobile-less.

NTSB is asking every state to ban the damn things.

Everybody go read the thread on the cell phone woman who smashed a BMW 5 series.

Would love to see stricter laws. The law banning texting while driving in WA state has done nothing whatsoever to curb this. The cops can't possibly pull over everyone. Penalties will have to increase to a level that catches peoples attention. I was driving to work the other morning and a woman was stopped in the middle of a roundabout. I thought her car had died. She was finishing a text and stopped in the middle of the road and circle vs. pulling ahead 10 feet to the side of the road. Idiot.

Ahh, so how are you going to do it so that the driver is banned yet all the passengers are able to do it?

This just aint gonna work. They banned driving without seatbelts years ago and we still see people getting stopped for not wearing them.

I agree with the need for safety reasons but good luck enforcing it.

So how are you going to make things different between the driver and passengers?

This just aint gonna work...

They are recommending the states do this... they are not requiring that the states do this...yet... There is a difference...

It is semantics..... I have had to re-write specs because "should" was used instead of "shall"

I think there should be a "cone of silence" that hovers over a car that is in motion that prevents incoming or out going calls...

A good friend of mine who is an amazing racer car pilot... devolves into a road hazard when he is on the phone while driving... even hands free... We can be towing and a call is received and the speed bleeds down to hazardous... weaving etc...

Cell phones are one of our greatest conveniences and one of our greatest nuisances..

Again, I think cell phones while driving should be treated exactly the same as a DUI. But it ain't NTSB's job to do so. Most people who have driven drunk thought they were ok to drive when they got behind the wheel. 100% of cell phone chatters and texters know they're doing so while driving.
