Costco is having a sale on the memory foam mattress right now. I'm thinking that it isn't for someone who is basically built like a short, squat cigarette vending machine though.

Side sleepers need a SOFT mattress. Back sleepers need a firmer mattress.

I start out on my back then wake up on my side or on my belly. Don't we all move around in our sleep?

~shrug~ i'd argue that you are wrong. it really is the bomb. anyway..... PM me if you want more information.

We're mattress shopping too. My wife really wants a latex mattress partly because she's pretty granola and they are supposedly pretty green (I'm letting her take point on this so I won't be getting into any debates about any 'facts') and hypoallergenic which is kind of a big deal for me.

We laid down on one yesterday afternoon and it was f'ing awesome. It wasn't unreasonably priced so she's doing some more research and shopping for a new bed since we're upgrading to a king.

Mattress companies seem to be very hard to nail down...seems very mafia like to me.

Consumer Reports totally didn't cover latex beds - a real disappointment to me.

Had a sleep number. Didn't realize it was causing my back pain until I went on an extended vacation and my back felt better. Got rid of the select comfort/sleep number and my back has been much better since.

I am with the mattress police. I notice you donīt have any name tags here. I am afraid I will have to give you a ticket. :D

I too have one of those memory-foam mattresses and it is the best mattress I have ever been laid on. I mean, it's the best I have ever slept on. By far. I STRONGLY urge any mattress shopper to check them out. Take your time, talk to people. If you gather enough information, I think you will find the Tempurpedic mattress, or quality replica, to be the future of human sleep mattresses. Plus...they don't squeak when you, ummmm, exercise. Truly the bomb, regardless of your size, shape or weight.

With that said, DO NOT pay asking price for the mattress at any of the national chain mattress stores. The markup on mattresses is more than jewelry. I educated myself online before I went shopping recently, found the one my wife and I liked, and got a quote. Roughly $5K for a high end pocketed spring coil with pillow top, yadda, yadda... I acted insulted, whipped out my trusty iphone, and found the same mattress at competitor for $2K less. The guy called his "boss" and no haggle immediately matched the price, proving the mark up is extreme. I pressed them harded and got even more off. Sorry sound like a cheapo, but I hate getting that kinda shaft. YMMV.

Very True, but TempurPedic has a price list that they & us little guys HAVE to follow or have the line pulled, while TempurPedic is the #1 selling mattress (thanks to lots of ADVERTISING) there is a new guy in town, and we also carry that.. Anyone interested, call James at his direct line (239)280-9050, he has been a Porsche guy & PCA member since 1978 and his back ground on back & sleep issues is solid, unlike the guy at a big box store... There is much more to bedding & sleeping than just a mattress, proper pillows, make a huge difference

MEMORY FOAM - I will never, ever, ever, go back to any type of box spring/mattress set-up again.

We bought our Tempur-Pedic knock-off a year ago and every single night, when I get in bed, I think "this is so awesomely comfortable."

In the words of Nynor and Supe, it's the bomb.

RE: Memory foam, I got a 4" pad and love it... and at a fraction of the cost.

Do you really need 10-12 inches of memory foam?

Most memory foam mattresses only have memory foam for the top 2-6". That's layed over a firmer(cheaper) base material.

Wife and I perchased new mattress this summer. For some different reasons we ended up with a Serta i-Comfort Prodigy. I have lumbar disc issues. I can't fall asleep and my wife can't stay asleep. She weighs 125 and I weigh 225. Anyway we're tough to fit, so to speak.

We were sleeping on a Simmons as we really felt the pocket coils added isolation. E.g. me rolling over didn't wake her. After 10 years it was toast. We had added a 3" memory foam topper some time back and liked it.

When we started looking I really liked the latex mattresses. Seemed to offer more support and less of the 'in the mattress' feel than memory foam. Big problem with the latex mattresses we chose was any movement could be felt all across the mattress.

We wanted to buy local and narrowed our choices down to TempurPedic and the I-Comfort. They are about the same price wise. The thing that pushed us (me) over to the I-Comfort was with model we chose there is a layer of latex underneath the memory foam and I (at least think) I can feel that diffrence. I-Comfort feels similar to the Tempur Cloud but seems to have a little more push back and less sinking feeling.

We've only had the bed for a few months but so far so good. It was kind of a roll of the dice as the I-Comfort is new to the market but it comes with a 25 year warranty and we know the sellers well. I'm confident if there are any issues they we be dealt with.

Latex or Memory foam. They are different animals and you'll like one or the other. No way I'd go back to an innerspring mattress.

We got a Sleep Number last year, we both hate it now. I feel like I'm laying on an inner tube. When I lay on my side it tends to roll me one way or the other. Keep in mind, trying it out in the store I thought it felt good, you probably need to lay on something for a good 6 hours to see if it lives up to the hype. If I lay there for a few minutes I don't realize that I'm tensing a few mussles to hold myself in place, but over the duration of the night this sucks. Even when I sleep on my back or stomach, something just isn't right about it. I've tried different settings, etc, but after almost a year my back hurts as bad as with the crappy old mattress we got rid of.

widebody911 12-29-2011 06:55 PM

I'm in this boat right now. I've slept on a sleep number and loved it, but a) I can't see paying $3k-$4k for a bed; b) I spent some time reading reviews, and it seems the quality has gone to sheet, in a manner of speaking. The 30-day trial is a ripoff, as you have to pay shipping both ways, plus it looks like you get stuck 'owning' some of the pieces because they don't take them back as part of the trial program.

I also looked at tempurpedic, but the complaints there were that he beds were too hot, stank like chemicals, and sagged over time.

Hard-Deck 12-29-2011 07:00 PM

We have a TempurPedic and we absolutely love it. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed so spend the money right. Whatever you buy, make sure to get a Kevlar mattress cover.

...

actually, the big mattress companies have decontented (cheapened) their mattresses -- flipping is no longer really possible, or worthwhile

a mattress used to last many years, and now only a few years ... or less

there are no laws about this, so the consumer is getting screwed

BTW _ I am talking about Sealy, & etc.

AFAIK, a $2,000 mattress performs well - just as well as an $800 mattress used to

Beds are for boinking! I get all my sleep done at my desk...

Simmons Beauty Rest Pillow Top. King Size. $1600 a few years ago. As comfortable as a King's Down at a fraction of the price. Why not buy through Byron if you can? Try 'em out elsewhere...give your buddy the business.

Yes. I'd also do commercials for Tempurpedic. Completely changed the way I sleep and feel about bed.

jcommin 12-30-2011 04:55 AM

The best time to buy is in Feb - March. Just about everthing is on sale. What to buy depends on how you sleep: side, back, thrash, stomach. Price point: how much do you want to spend? Finally, you got to try them. Delivery? is it free. do they take your old one.

Your basic research.

Tried Tempur-pedic memory foam--comfortable but hot and grossly overpriced. Great marketing at its finest indeed.

Ended up going with a Stearns and Foster and it is fantastic.
